Game Sales up 6 Percent, God of War 3 Leads the Charge

After a rocky 2009 followed by two months of double-digit declines, U.S. retail sales of video game software, hardware and accessories finally saw an uptick in March.

Market researcher NPD Group said Thursday total video game sales climbed 6 percent from the same month a year earlier, to $1.52 billion. Strong sales of Nintendo's gaming systems, new "Pokemon" games and Sony Corp.'s "God of War III" helped boost results.

Apple has wanted to give iPhone hacker George Hotz a stern talking-to for a while now, but it looks like Hotz may have a new tech nemesis brewing. George Hotz told BBC news that he has successfully hacked Sony's PlayStation 3-and it only took him 5 weeks. Hotz claims he started the hack last summer, analyzing the console for about three weeks, and then finally cracked the PS3 in about two weeks not too long ago.

Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.5 million copies after just four days of shelf life. This edition of Final Fantasy also drove up console sales as well, giving Sony a little something to smile about. According to the Business Insider, Sony sold 245,406 PS3 consoles in Japan just last week-striking another record.

Chinese Game to Function in Korea Thanks to a Vietnamese Company

Because of a certain game's popularity, a Vietnamese game publishing company is creating a game service in Korea. Vietnam's VTC, a multimedia group, started this service for the Chinese web game Three Kingdoms. This particular game is currently one of the top two games in China and Vietnam. Until now, there has not been a Vietnamese game service available in Korea.

VTC Korea, a branch of VTC created last May, plans to spend US$10 million in the next 5 years for online gaming, their broadcasting station, and digital content.
