The 3rd October is a national day - both in Korea as well as in Germany. Whereas Korea celebrates the foundation of its people in 2333 B.C., our national day is much younger. It is the day of German Unity which we celebrate since 1990.

It is a great pleasure for me to congratulate the Korea IT Times on its 5th anniversary. Information and communication technologies (ICT) are now an integral part of our everyday life as well as one of the driving forces behind higher productivity, growth and employment. In Germany, the ICT sector now contributes more to value creation than the classical technologies of automotive and mechanical engineering.

Information technology, IT for short, has made great contributions to Korea's economic development in a way that has led many people to believe that the Korean economy could not have achieved such rapid growth had it not been for IT.

The growth of the IT industry is, in turn, attributable to the help of IT-based media outlets such as the Korea IT Times.

The magazine is one of the leading IT-based magazines about Korea in the English language.  This is quite helpful to us as the government agency in charge of the country’s industrial, trade and energy policies. In 2004, when the Korea IT Times was founded, mobile phone exports topped the list of goods exported, outdistancing those of semiconductors. That year, we also marked the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the super-speed Internet services and witnessed the number of Internet subscribers exceed the 30 million mark. Now, five years later, we are seeing the advent of the era of DMB and WiBro; a limited introduction of a real-name Internet registration system; and an explosive expansion of the PMP and mobile navigation device market.
