Dongwon Industries will enter the "growing fisheries" to secure stable and sustainable fisheries resources in the future.
Dongwon Industries announced on Aug. 31 that it will create an "Environment Smart Land Salmon Farming Complex" in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province.
The company plans to invest about 200 billion won in a 35,000 pyeong site in Yangyang County to start construction of a land-based salmon farming complex within the year and start operations sequentially from next year. The Gangwon Provincial Government will hold an investment agreement ceremony on Sept. 1.
Dongwon plans to grow the domestic aquaculture industry, which has remained at the level of light industry until now, into a heavy industry level industry through large-scale facility investment and land salmon farming complexes based on cutting-edge new technologies.
The land salmon farming complex will be built as a state-of-the-art facility that introduces smart construction methods based on the environment-friendly "Flow Through System - Reuse" technology and the Fourth Industrial Revolution technology.
The Flow Through System - Reuse technology was acquired by Dongwon Industries in July through an investment agreement with Norway's land farming company "Salmon Evolution."
Unlike the existing farming method, which requires regular full replacement of contaminated aquaculture seawater, only 35% of sea water is replaced and 65% of sea water is reusable through continuous circulation, allowing the aquaculture environment to remain constant.
In addition, 35% of the replaced seawater is environmentally friendly as it removes pollutants through a filter system.
Along with this, IoT (Internet of Things), ICT, and big data technologies will be applied to the entire aquaculture complex to maintain a constant level of aquaculture environment such as water temperature and nutritional status, and to monitor and control aquaculture facilities in real time.
Dongwon Industries aims to produce 20,000 tons of salmon annually and achieve 200 billion won (168 million) in annual sales through land-based salmon farming complexes.
It also plans to establish an R&D center and salmon processing facility in the aquaculture complex to unify the entire process from the production of salmon to manufacturing and distribution, and directly manage the quality of salmon.
This land farming estate development is likely to contribute to activating the regional economy in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, and the East Sea coastal areas with the import substitution effect of 200 billion won (168 million), production inducement effect in the construction sector reaching some 250 billion won ($210 million) and the creation of some 400 jobs.
Lee Myung-woo, CEO of Dongwon Industries, said, "During the fierce global food resource war, we have established our own domestic salmon farming complex to secure stable and sustainable fisheries resources. We plan to foster it as Asia's largest fisheries bio-industrial complex in the future."
