When cicadas' endless singing start functioning as an alarm clock in the morning, cosmopolitans start packing their suitcases and wonder, 'Would my phone be smart enough to work in overseas What about the chargers' Smart world is questioning whether the information technology started as a global "product". In the process of shifting islands of intelligent technology to the world of intelligent technology, one inevitable step is to meet a global standard.

On August 5, 2010, Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) hosted International Seminar on Smart IT and Global Standardization at the Millennium Seoul Hilton Hotel. About 300 attendees from home and abroad participated this seminar with the best interest in global standardization of smart IT. Huh Kyung, Administer of Korean Agency for Technology and Standards welcomed the guests and said, "The purpose of our gathering is to promote smarter life on green planet. Our seminar today will heavily discuss everything from green ICT activities to cloud computing to IT security techniques. All of these areas are in high demand of standardization. I would like to encourage all our guests to take a full advantage of this seminar and share ideas to promote global products that meets global standardization."

Oh Hae-seok, Special Advisor to President on IT

Oh Hae-seok, special advisor to President on IT added, "This seminar is very significant to us since Lee Myung-bak administration is heavily focusing on green growth. Now that Smart Era has begun, we hope that international seminars like this will help us to establish strong policies that allow Korea to be the test-bed of smart IT."

Foreign guests asserted that system integration is a key role. Chairman Karen Higginbottom of ISO/IEC JTC 1 said, "ISO and IEC already had work areas initiated to promote international interoperability and connectivity. The mission of JTC 1 is to develop, maintain, promote, and facilitate IT standards required by global markets meeting business and user requirements."

Dr. Bruce Gracie, chairman of TSAG

Standardization work has been reaching the fields of intelligent transport systems, smart grid, e-waste, and sensor-based networks based on RFID & telemetry. Dr. Bruce Gracie, chairman of Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG) attended the seminar and said, "Smart Grid is recognized as a high priority topic at 2010 meeting of TSAG. ITU develops standards on communication aspects of next generation electricity because of its higher energy efficiently and lower GHG emission. Smart Grid also integrates the electric vehicles and the renewable energy, which are distributed and less stable."

Dr. Gracie continued, "Cloud Computing is also recognized as a key topic for ITU-T at the 2010 meeting of TSAG." He stated that Cloud computing is becoming a growing resource for business and individuals. There are many advantages of Cloud Computing such as, huge computing power without huge investment, energy and cost efficiency and flexible and quick adaptation to the needs.

"As the interest of Cloud Computing is growing, 'Focus Group on Cloud Computing: First Meeting' was held on June 14 to 16 in ITU, Geneva, Switzerland. 47 participated people, 6 from Korea and more than 25 related organizations invited to the first meeting to collaborate with cloud computing communities including other standards organizations and consortia. In September 2, the second meeting will be held for 5 days in Geneva," Chairman Gracie noted.

Many guests from overseas attended the seminar to have an in depth discussion on Smart IT

Kim Yong-woon, principal member of engineering staff of ETRI, further emphasized the government's high concentration on green growth movement. Regarding to green ICT activities and their benefits he noted, "Climate change problems are getting serious all over the world. And Green ICT will play an important role in the future. Since Korea plans to reduce GHG emissions 30 percent below by 2020, Green of ITC challenges energy consumption, CO2 emissions reduction by 2020.

In fact, ICT contributes only 2 percent of GHG sector and 98 percent of window of opportunity still remains. Green ICT will help to reduce 1 billion tons of CO2 by 2020 with various ICT solutions, smart city planning, smart building, smart appliances, demineralization services and individual optimization.

The motion for Green ITC standardization looks active. IES, ATIS, ETSI Ecma International, ITU-T and ISO/IEC JTC 1 are engaged in Green ITC."

Further discussions covered the subject of international tariffs and accounting issues in ITU as well as the standardization activities on cloud computing, 3D technology, and IT security techniques. Smarter life on green planet is shaping its way with the international seminar on smart IT and global standardization, and more international seminars are expected to be arranged in the near future.
