Abstract: Conversion of light energy to electrical energy by using solar cells has long been considered one of the few sustainable options for an electrical energy supply in the future. In the past, commercial use was restricted largely to remote area applications where conventional electricity is expensive. Recently, the major application of solar cells changed to become a generation of residential electricity in urban areas where the electricity is already supplied by the conventional grid. This talk covers the current market and technology status of the solar cells in Korea. Reviewing market trends, the speaker will discuss a high efficiency approach in mono-crystalline silicon solar cells, a low cost approach in multi-crystalline and thin film solar cell R&D activities.

Abstract: Korean Government sponsored R&D programs for Photovoltaics began in 1989, and the related R&D budget has increased significantly for the past five years from 5,078 million USD ('03) to 17,065 million USD ('07). Korea currently invests in the development of various types of solar cells such as crystalline silicon, thin-film, CIGS, dye-sensitized and organic solar cells. In addition, the Korean government has formulated the following policy measures to reduce financial risks of PV technology and to stimulate the market: feed-in tariffs, mandatory use in public buildings, tax incentives and tariff reduction. Solar home Project was also launched in 2004 to achieve successful deployment of PV technologies and to foster the industry. As the current administration published the plan for Low-carbon and Green Growth, Korean photovoltaics RD&D programs and the industry are expected to pick up even greater momentum in the near future.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the dependence of the structural properties of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 polycrystalline thin films prepared by a two-step selenization of co-evaporated metallic precursors in an Se-containing environment under N2 gas flow. Characterizations included studies of morphological features, formation of crystalline phases and the depth of compositional uniformity of the final thin films. From these studies optimum growth parameters were determined for the preparation of high-quality chalcopyrite thin films with structural and compositional properties suitable for solar cell applications. The formation and optoelectronic properties of glass / Mo / Cu (In.Ga) Se2 / CdS / ZnO / Al-Ni thin film solar cells are also reported.

Abstract: The transition to energy significance - how PV will take its place as a major source of clean, renewable energy. PV is poised and ready to become a major contributor to the Earth's energy needs. The cost of PV is declining and its market share growing rapidly. This talk will outline how continued cost reduction and performance increases, paired with progressive public policy and regulatory initiatives, will continue to drive the future growth needed for the transition to a clean, renewable energy future.
