ORNIS CEO Kim Sung-min aims to advance into foreign markets with artificial intelligence technology for identifying the gender of chicks.

The novel idea of using artificial intelligence for sexing chicks is drawing attention in the youth startup market.

ORNIS, which is making a chick sex identifying machine and system using Computer Vision-based artificial intelligence (also known as "chickchick-pokpok"), has three young founders, including CEO Kim Sung-min, put their heads together.

They started running this business in April with the support of the Campus Town Project Group at Yonsei University.

"In agriculture, development is slower in terms of technology and data compared to other industries, and it is difficult for the members of the agricultural field to access the latest technologies," said CEO Sung-min Kim.

In particular, seeing human progress in even parts technologies can replace that such as artificial intelligence, we jumped into this field with the idea that if we engage a little, we can increase productivity and efficiency.”

ORINS believed that much a part of our lives could be improved with good use of the field of artificial intelligence, and applied it to the gender determining of chicks among the agricultural and livestock fields, which are technically underdeveloped.

"I thought artificial intelligence technology could improve the long-term training period for chick sexers, simple repetitive tasks, aging of jobs, and human resources shortages." CEO Kim said.

"We will continue to secure an enormous amount of chick anus for the development of artificial intelligence and improve and supplement artificial intelligence accuracy specialized in identifying the gender of chicks."

"We are planning to get a related patent after establishing a system that can use the app named 'Chickchick-pokpok' at the hatchery."

Although they could settle in like this, there were a lot of obstacles before they started.

"As students with little social experience preparing for our business, there were many difficulties in law, tax accounting, and document processing," he said. We could ask my advisor and mentor about it or find data to solve it, and it could be an opportunity for us to grow before starting our own business," he said.

"We're still a team that lacks a lot, but we have the strength to learn and learn quickly. As we accepted the meaningful feedbacks, we could achieve results in the projects we applied for.

ORNIS has a blueprint to open a market mainly in the overseas poultry market, which requires large amounts of chick sexing.

"Our goal is to make it easy and quick for anyone to identify the gender of chicks by using 'Chick chick-pok pok'."
“It would be best if socially underprivileged people such as the elderly and the disabled could do the job of chick sexing so they could be economically self-sufficient,” said Kim.
