Sensor Tower, a market research company, released its quarterly app rankings for the European mobile market on January 9th, 2020 — and a familiar name stood out amongst the world’s top platform companies. Azar, a 1-to-1 real-time video chat platform produced by Seoul-headquartered Hyperconnect, ranked 6th following major global titles: Tinder, Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and Google One. Azar was also ranked 4th on Google Play Store.

The secret behind Hyperconnect’s consistent presence among global app giants? Video and AI technology. Hyperconnect was the world’s first company to commercialize Google’s “WebRTC” technology for a mobile video environment, launching Azar in 2014 on a stable, high quality and ultra-low latency foundation.

Azar was an instant success upon launch given its ability to connect users seamlessly by overcoming shaky mobile network environments, low-specification smartphones phones and other obstacles — achievements unobtained by other video chat services.

Using proprietary in-house technology, Azar was able to solve the performance and network bandwidth issues that plagued other P2P communication providers. Azar’s advanced platform enabled group video calls with up to 8 mobile devices — connected without server intervention — and two-way real-time broadcasting with high definition and low lag. Now, up to 85 million WebRTC calls per day can be supported without issue.

“Azar is available in 230 countries and in 19 languages, with non-Korean users accounting for 99% of the user base. It is a beloved communication medium by people from all corners of the world. Our tremendous growth has been made possible by unique technology that provides the sensation of ‘hyper connection’ and we will continue to focus on the development of innovative technologies that support this fundamental human need,” according to a Hyperconnect representative.

Hyperconnect, based in Seoul, South Korea, is globally recognized for its advancements in the world of artificial intelligence, particularly its development of a proprietary “on-device” AI engine. As a next-generation deep learning technology running directly on mobile devices, it’s on-device AI drives powerful in-app capabilities without data ever leaving the device, mitigating data privacy issues while enabling groundbreaking outcomes across video, image, voice, and text.

The company launched real-time video chat app Azar in 2014, social live streaming platform Hakuna Live in 2019 and social discovery dating app Slide in 2020.

It’s accolades also include its real-time voice translation technology, ultimately published and adopted in 2019 and 2020 at INTERSPEECH, the International Society for Speech Language Processing. Hyperconnect was the first Korean company to win the CVPR 2018 International Low-Power Image-Type Competition (LPIRC).
