LG Electronics made an announcement on March 24 that it will supply ESS (Energy Storage System) for commercial use to Hawaii in the U.S.

According to LG Electronics, the Korea-U.S. consortium, which the company participated in, recently signed a supply contract related to the project to build a "Microgrid" promoted by the Hawaiian state government.

Microgrid is an eco-friendly power system that uses new renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

In addition to LG Electronics, the Korea Energy Technology Evaluation, and Planning (KETEP), Encore Technologies, University of Hawaii, Seoul National University, and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology participated in the consortium.

LG Electronics is planning to supply energy storage systems to the NELHA (Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority) starting in June this year. LG Electronics' energy storage system supplies power to the seawater supply system of fish farms operated by the institute.

The state of Hawaii aims to expand its eco-friendly energy policy to supply electricity as 100% renewable energy sources by 2045.

This is the first time that LG Electronics is supplying commercial ESS to U.S. state government. LG Electronics is planning to expand its business in overseas ESS markets based on this contract.

LG Electronics' ESS is easy to install because it has a 250kW PCS (Power Conditioning System), PMS (Power Management System), a 756kWh battery, a heating and cooling machine, fire extinguishing facilities, and a power distribution board that stores and transports power to the power system.

This is the battery capacity that can buffer about 10 electric cars at the same time with a driving distance of 400km.

ESS, which will be installed this time, can be monitored 24 hours a day to respond quickly in case of unusual things. Customers can remotely control PCS and batteries as well as air conditioning devices.

Ahn Hyuk-sung, managing director of ESS business at LG Electronics, said, "We will lead overseas ESS markets with differentiated products based on the best technology in the industry."
