Merck announced on April 13 that Kai Beckmann, CEO of Merck’s Electronics business, and Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, agreed to a partnership to expand the investment of Merck’s Electronics business and to continue to foster talent and provide trainings for the semiconductor and display fields.

Kai Beckmann revealed that Merck plans to invest over € 200 million (over 250 billion won) in semiconductor and OLED through its locations in Gyeonggi Province and encouraged cooperation to ensure a smooth implementation of the planned investments for the next 5 years. 

“We plan to invest in the future success of our customers in the Gyeonggi Province. We will walk together lock-step with our customers and grow to support their own growth, ensuring an appropriate, reliable and sustainable supply of our offerings”, said Kai Beckmann. 

“I thank Merck for their continued significant investment since a very long time which is greatly helping to develop the local economy in Gyeonggi Province and secure jobs.” said Governor Lee Jae-myung. 

In October 2020, Merck signed a memorandum of understanding to invest € 20 million (25 billion won) to expand the component factory for LCD tests and OLED production facility in its factory in Poseung, Pyeongtaek. The investment is well underway. As part of its ESG program, Merck will foster talents in the semiconductor and display field together with Gyeonggi Province. This includes providing technical training in display technologies to the science technology high schools and college students majoring in related fields.

Electronics is one of three business sectors of Merck, which has a 353-year history. The Electronics business of Merck develops and manufactures materials for semiconductors and displays worldwide. In Korea, Merck operates six R&D and production facilities including Pyeongtaek, Anseong, Ansan, and Sihwa, Banwol, where 800 employees are working. Merck has more than 1,350 employees in Korea with 11 sites. 

In addition, the company has been working on and producing high value-added products in the semiconductor and display fields ever since the acquisition of AZ, Sigma Aldrich (SAFC) and Versum Materials in and after 2014, such as CMP slurries, semiconductor materials and equipment. 

Merck Korea is a world-leading company in Electronics, Life Science and Healthcare that has achieved exponential growth over the last 32 years since entering the Korean market in 1989 and recorded € 135 million (180 billion won) in sales in Korea in 2019.
