Who says a TV is an idiot box Maybe it was in the past, but not anymore. Today's TV is much smarter than you might think. People can surf the web, download videos from YouTube, stream games from websites and even download news and traffic updates.

As Smart TV is rising as a new trend in the industry, to maintain their position in the TV market as manufacturing leaders around the world, Korea's industries and academies gathered at the Smart TV Forum on 7th of September, which was held in Seoul, Korea.

Yoon Boo-keun, President of visual display business unit at Samsung
Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, KT, SKB, LG U+, KBS, EBS, CJ Hello Vision, NHN and many representatives of related industries were present. Some organizations such as KETI (Korea Electronics Technology Institute), NIA (National Inforamtion Society Agency), KISA (Korea Information Security Agency), ETRI (Eletronics Telecommunications Research Institute), KEIT (Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology) and academic institutions, including Kyunghee University attended the forum.

Yoon Boo-keun, President of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics Co., was appointed as the first chairman of the forum. President Yoon stated that collaboration with telecommunications and media broadcasting companies is very important for Smart TV's development. Therefore, he will try to develop a business model in which various industries, consumer electronics manufacturers, telecommunications, cable television, and so on could work together.

He also said that ensuring that content is available is important. As Yoon made clear his position regarding the availability of content, it is expected that the forum will work hard to obtain unique and local-friendly content.

Additionally, the Smart TV forum will support technologies, standards, laws, institutions and research for the promotion of Smart TV, based on changing analysis and market trends. It will also contribute to the enlistment of the Smart TV industry as a bridge between public and private sectors.

Currently, Korea is the world's top TV manufacturer, but since Samsung and LG have been surpassed on Smart TV by Google, they need to buckle up to retake their position.

It is apparent that every TV manufacturer around the world, from Samsung to Google, are focused on Smart TV, the next generation of TV and the fierce competition that will begin in earnest sometime soon.

As the players jockey for position, according to experts, the global Smart TV market will reach 41 million units this year, to make up almost 20 percent of the entire TV market. They also predicted that the company that has a unique platform when compared with the rest will dominate the market.
