POSCO has started a project to restore forests in the aging area of the forest in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do.
POSCO held an arbor event in Deokgeori, Bongpyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun on April 24 to commemorate the start of a forest restoration project in Pyeongchang with Australian raw material supplier BHP and eco-friendly social enterprise Tree Planet.
According to POSCO on April 26, executives and employees of POSCO's raw material room, including Lee Ju-tae, head of POSCO's purchasing and investment division, Pyeongchang National Forest Management Office and Tree Planet officials attended the event.
This forest restoration project is a part of the POSCO's Green with POSCO campaign, which can plant 10,000 young trees on a three-hectare site in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, where forests are aging, and increase carbon absorption by 11%.
Planting species are the spruce and stone pear trees, and it is expected to be used as a source of income for local residents as honey and fruit can be collected from trees in the future.
In addition, POSCO will continue to take care of Pyeongchang Forest in Gangwon Province by additional activities such as fertilizer supply and pruning in the area where trees were planted in September.
Prior to the forest restoration project, POSCO and BHP signed a GEM matching fund on April 8 to protect the environment and contribute to the local community. The forest restoration will be operated through Tree Planet, an eco-friendly social enterprise, using the fund.
