SK E&S, which is expanding its eco-friendly energy business such as hydrogen and renewable energy, announced on April 29 that it will start research and development in the field of liquefied hydrogen drones along with South Korea's hydrogen drone-specialized companies, EXENS and Hylium Industries.
SK E&S decided to use its win-win cooperation fund to support research and development of liquefied hydrogen drones by small and medium-sized businesses specializing in drones and actively cooperate in commercializing them early.
Hydrogen drones that use hydrogen as fuel are expected to be used in logistics and transportation fields such as drone delivery and drone taxis in the future as they can carry heavy objects with long flight times.
SK E&S explained that if drones use liquefied hydrogen, they can make fuel tanks lighter and more stable because they have higher storage density than gas hydrogen.
In addition, SK E&S will jointly operate 'SK E&S Hydrogen Drone Cooperation Hall' at '2021 Drone Show Korea (4.29-5.1)' which will be held in BEXCO, Busan.
More than 20 different types of hydrogen drones, including liquefied hydrogen drones, will be exhibited.
"Drones that use liquefied hydrogen as an energy source will be the key to generalization of hydrogen mobility in the future," said Choo Hyung-wook, CEO of SK E&S. "SK E&S will take the lead in building a wide hydrogen ecosystem, including hydrogen production, distribution, and industrial use."
