Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (Doosan), which has the largest supply of offshore wind power in Korea, has once again proved its competitiveness in offshore wind power by winning orders to supply equipments and materials to the largest offshore wind power complex in Korea.
Doosan announced on May 7 that it has signed a contract with KEPCO to supply 100MW of Jeju Hallim offshore wind power equipment. It was selected as the preferred bidder in 2019 through a competitive bid that comprehensively evaluates technology and prices.
By signing the contract, Doosan is planning to supply 18 offshore wind power generators with 5.56MW class. The contract is worth about KRW 190 billion won ($170 million), and after completion, a long-term maintenance contract for wind power generators will be signed separately.
The Jeju Hallym offshore wind power project will be established in waters near Hallym Port in northwestern Jeju. The business entity is Jeju Hallim Marine Wind Power, which consists of KEPCO, Korea Midland Power, Hyundai Engineering & Construction and KEPCO E&C.
Doosan's 5.56MW offshore wind generator is a large product that has a length of 68m. It is designed to withstand strong typhoons of up to 70 m/s.
In fact, the prototype installed in Jeju was also operated normally by Typhoon Chiba, which recorded a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 56.5m/s in 2016. The 5.56MW marine model received international type certification from UL, an international certification body, in 2019.
"It is more meaningful to supply equipments to Jeju Hallim offshore wind power, the first offshore wind complex to be carried out since the government announced its renewable energy 3020 policy," said Park In-won, vice president of EPC BG at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. "We will not only do our best to complete the construction but also try to revitalize the domestic wind industry ecosystem so that it can be a precedent for proving the competitiveness of the offshore wind power industry in Korea."
Meanwhile, Doosan is actively preparing for an increase in orders for offshore wind power in Korea by completing the construction of its second wind power plant in Changwon headquarters and expanding its workforce earlier this year.
Doosan currently has 3MW and 5.5MW offshore wind power generators, and the 8MW model is scheduled to be commercialized in 2022.
