Hyundai Motor Group announced on June 21 that it had completed the acquisition process and finally acquired Boston Dynamics from SoftBank Group after signing the main contract in December last year.

Boston Dynamics was valued at about $1.1 billion in the deal. As a result of the acquisition, Hyundai Motor Group will hold an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics and Softbank Group will hold a 20% stake.

The robot market has grown rapidly based on demands from various fields such as services and lifesaving and technological developments such as sensors and motors. It is predicted that it will expand further along with development of ICT technology in the future.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to strengthen its future competitiveness by developing technologies for humanity through new robot businesses and providing customers with a higher level of experience.

Hyundai Motor Group judged that Boston Dynamics has the world's best core technology comprehensively in areas such as logistics robots, guidance and support robots, self-driving (walking) and robot arms to enter the humanoid robot market.

Boston Dynamics has drawn attention for developing a four-legged walking robot "Spot" and a two-legged upright walking robot "Atlas". In March, it introduced "Stretch," a robot that is specialized in warehouses and logistics facilities.

Hyundai Motor Group is expected to secure a leading position in robotics with the acquisition of Boston Dynamics and speed up its transition to a smart mobility solution provider.

It is also expected that synergy between self-driving cars, UAM and Smart Factory technologies will be obtained. Hyundai Motor Group is also planning to combine its capabilities with Boston Dynamics in manufacturing, logistics and construction.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group released videos featuring vehicles such as hydrogen-electric vehicles, Nexo, wearable robotics, and robots from Boston Dynamics on its online channel.
