Korea University recently participated in a joint project called “Bring the Media Internet to Life” with several other organizations in Europe.

“Bringing the Media Internet to Life” - or simply, 3D Life – is a European Union funded project aimed at integrating research conducted within Europe in the field of Media Internet.

3DLife is a Network of Excellence, funded under the “Cooperation” segment of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

Korea University is working in cooperation with Queen Mary, University of London of the UK, Dublin City University of Ireland, Heinrich Hertz Institute, Fraunhofer in Germany, Informatics & Telematics Institute in Greece, MiraLab, University of Geneva in Switzerland and Telecom Paristech in this project.

“The concepts of the Internet in Europe and in Korea are somewhat different,” said Kim Hyoung-joong, a Korean project leader and a professor of the Graduate School of Information Management and Security at Korea University. “In Europe, the Internet is known to be more of a place where numerous multimedia flutter. We are now conducting research to find out what influences those multimedia inflict on our lives and how to develop an environment to utilize them better.”

After nearly ten months of existence, the project has started several technical and non-technical activities. The success of all these activities is certainly due to the profound commitment of the project partners, its external advisory boards and the project officer as commission representative.

It is widely argued that the next generation of Media Computing Services will become the cornerstone of Information Society this century. Its impact on the entertainment industry is already clear. However, its impact is expected to be much broader in changing the way that society delivers key services such as health care, learning and commerce.

Since the 3DLife project comprehensively addresses several challenges of Media Internet, its impact is expected to be vast in several aspects of modern life, including industry, academia and society. 3DLife integrates leading European and Korean research groups and aspires to create a long-term integration of critical mass for innovation of currently fragmented research addressing media Internet.

The main objectives of the Network of Excellence (NoE) are to foster the creation of sustainable relationships between existing national research groups and to start the development of a Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE) in the field. Plus, to create sufficient momentum by integrating an existing large number of researchers and resources and to push forward new paradigms on 3D media communication and interaction over the Internet to influence European and world research agenda in several key aspects of 3D Media Internet.

3DLife aims at supporting the creation of a Virtual Center of Excellence in Media Internet and conduct cooperative research in the field. To achieve this goal 3DLife integrates complementary expertise, enables resource optimization and sharing, and fosters research in Media Internet technology.

Media Internet supports professional and novice content prosumers. Media Internet is at the crossroads of digital multimedia content and Internet technologies. It encompasses two main aspects: Media being delivered through Internet networking technologies (including hybrid technologies) and Media being generated, consumed, shared and experienced on the web.

The Media Internet is evolving to support novel user experiences such as immersive environments including sensorial experiences beyond video and audio (engaging all of the human senses) that are adaptable to the user, the networks and the services. Kim added, “Over one hundred project suggestions are submitted to win the EU fund and less than ten applicants have the honor of being selected. Our project was one of them.”
