Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., announced its latest 4G base stations power the commercial 4G mobile broadband network launched today in New York City by Clearwire Communications, LLC on November 1, 2010.

With Clearwire's 4G mobile broadband network, both consumers and businesses can enjoy super fast and richer mobile internet service at home, in the office and even on the move at a reasonable price. The Clearwire 4G network serves a large ecosystem of 4G devices, including the first two 4G handsets in the U.S. and dozens of 4G embedded netbooks and notebooks, with a robust spectrum portfolio capable of meeting expected future capacity demands.

As a leading vendor for Clearwire's 4G Mobile WiMAX project since its inception, Samsung provided its latest 4G base stations, which adopted a common platform capable of supporting Mobile WiMAX (802.16e), WiMAX 2 (802.16m), as well as both FDD-LTE and TD-LTE. Considering New York City's unique and vast urban architecture, Samsung also supplied macro base stations and pico base stations to provide quality of service and seamless mobile broadband coverage.

Mr. Woonsub Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Telecommunication Systems Business of Samsung Electronics, said, "We're very excited to introduce 4G Mobile WiMAX service to customers through our collaboration with Clearwire. Mobile WiMAX will be the best answer to meet the demands of expanding mobile data traffic and improving interaction among people, productivity at work and overall quality of life."

"The launch of Clearwire's 4G network in New York is a tremendous reminder that WiMAX is a substantial 4G service offering rich user experiences to consumers today," said Dr. John Saw, Chief Technology Officer, Clearwire. "Clearwire continues to set the pace for the mobile broadband industry's expansion in U.S. with the first 4G network, deepest spectrum portfolio and further expansion to other major cities later this year."

Clearwire currently provides 4G service in 62 markets across the United States where approximately 82 million people live and the company plans to continue to expand its 4G coverage. The CLEAR customer experience is similar to that provided by Wi-Fi, but without the short-range limitations of a traditional Internet hotspot. Today, CLEAR delivers average mobile download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps and peaks of more than 10 mbps.*

Samsung plays a prominent role in the 4G mobile industry, providing its market-proven equipment to 57 Mobile WiMAX operators in 36 countries. Samsung also plays an important role in the standardization and technical specification development for IMT-Advanced technologies. At the 4G World, Samsung demonstrated WiMAX 2 based on IEEE 802.16m, recording 330Mbps in throughput.
