"KT, the main telecom service provider for the G20 summit slated for November 11-12 in Seoul, will establish a communication support center for the G20 Summit," a top official of the company said.

Lee Suk-chae, chairman of the largest telephone carrier center in South Korea

"The KT communication support center will support international cards and ‘Egg', a portable wireless Internet connection device developed by the company. KT will also dispatch 10 IT supporters to the center to meet Internet A/S requests by some 4,000 journalists covering the global event," said Lee Suk-chae, chairman of the largest telephone carrier center in South Korea.
"For impeccable network service during the Seoul G20 Summit period, KT will also set up a total of 10,000 circuits for broadcasting, exclusive use and guard. To effectively cope with possible communication failures such as circuitry complications, cyber infiltration, a surge in traffic at home and abroad, earthquakes, and terrorism, the company will also check wire, wireless and satellite communication media," he said.
"We are building a perfect disaster defense system for general phones, public phones, fax, and internet lines established at event venues and the residences of state leaders," said the KT chairman.
In early November, KT conducted an emergency rehabilitation training exercise ahead of the G20 Summit to be held in November 11-12.
The Chairman added, "to this end, KT is operating a comprehensive situation room for 24 hours and a dispatch of 50 network specialists to COEX, the venue of the G20 Seoul Summit," he then mentioned, "KT will exert its all-out effort to boost the national image of Korea, famous for its strong information and technology skills, which is hosting the G20 summit."
In August of this year, KT accomplished an agreement with the Presidential Committee for the G20 Seoul Summit to take charge of telecom service operations for the global event.
"IT professionals will be dispatched throughout the G20 event halls to offer full support and KT will also enable G20 members to watch their local channels on their mobiles so that they can stay connected," Lee explained.
The country's No. 1 fixed-line service operator will also give the G20 members the option of watching their public channels through its Internet protocol television service in hotel rooms.

KT holds 89% of fixed lines in Korea

KT holds around 89% of the fixed-lines and 32% of the wireless service of the nation. There are now 18 subsidiaries owned by KT, including submarine cable, finance banking, business, etc.
Standing at the forefront of the digital era, KT has been spearheading advances in information technology in Korea since its inception in 1981. The first milestone for KT came in 1993 when the number of telephone lines surpassed 20 million, which was followed by the launch of Korea's first telecommunication satellite in 1995.
The high-speed Internet subscriber base topped 6 million in 2004 (7.1 million in 2010), and the company introduced the world's first commercial WiBro service two years later.
In 2007, KT reinvented itself as a media and entertainment company with the launch of QOOK TV which combines telecommunications with broadcasting.
In 2009, KT merged with KTF, its wireless subsidiary, to keep pace with the global trends of fixed/mobile convergence and will continue to head this convergence market between voice and data, wired and wireless, and broadcasting and telecommunications.

PR of Korea's traditional culture and IT industry

"KT will build a Korea IT promotion room at the COEX Convention Center, which will be the center stage of the G20 summit. It is also launching a related campaign, together with Seoul City, to herald the nation's traditional culture and IT industry to the world," Lee said.
"Time Adventure, Virtual Tour and Multi Touch Screen will be introduced in the IT promotion room to help visitors learn about Korea's cultural history, Korea's top 10 most beautiful spots designated by UNESCO, the historical change of the Han River and Cheonggye Stream, and advanced IT technology," he explained.
Through the Multi Touch Screen, visitors can enjoy a video which offers information on "hanbok," traditional Korean clothes, "hansik," Korean food, "hanok," Korean houses, and other elements of Korean culture.
The 3-D broadcasting hall, which will first be airing in real-time internet protocol television (IPTV) programs in 3-D, will be located next to the IT experience hall. The project will be jointly carried out by the Korea Communications Commission and KT.
In the meantime, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will operate a 4-D image room from Novvember 8 to 13, near the main event hall. The images of Mount Nam, Cheonggye Stream, Gwanghwamun, Digital Media City in Sangam, Yongsan and the renovated City Hall will be shown on the LED screen using 4-D technology.
It will exhibit a Seoul IT tour for the foreign press and make use of the 12 high-tech bus stations around the hotels where the global leaders will stay to show off the country's advanced technologies.
"KT also plans to provide mobile IPTV services so that the global leaders can watch news in their native languages even while they are on-the-go," Lee noted. Related to this, the company will give out electronic pads that are equipped with wireless broadband networks for the foreign guests to enjoy mobile IPTV service.
Lee added that KT is now working with the embassies of the G20 nations to air their national television network programs using its technology. It also projects to offer the wireless 3W network of wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA), Wi-Fi, WiBro to help foreign state leaders, attendants, journalists, and other guests use communication service at anytime and anywhere in Korea.
