LG Uplus, a South Korean mobile network operator, announced today that it was selected as the sole operator of the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), the national railway operator in South Korea, as a railroad optical communication network eco-friendly power system builder.

The railway optical network is a self-contained communication network that connects stations across the country in order to operate safe rail services.

This project replaces old rectifiers and storage batteries (battery) in 25 stations nationwide with high-efficiency eco-friendly products and introduces a redundant power management system (EMS) to monitor energy consumption in real time.

KORAIL explained that it is a project that is being carried out to strengthen ESG management.

KORAIL gave high marks to companies that realize the value of ESG management, such as realization of safety and high-efficiency, low-carbon environment, in the process of selecting a business operator.

LG Uplus signed a consortium with information communication specialists and small and medium-sized manufacturers to participate in this project.

The LG Uplus consortium plans to supply high-efficiency rectifiers with low energy loss and eco-friendly lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that do not contain harmful heavy metals.

KORAIL expects to reduce annual electricity consumption by 464.2MWh and carbon emissions by 2,466 tons through this project.

“I am proud that LG Uplus, which knows the value of ESG management and provides the best options to customers, has been selected as the optical communication power system builder of Korea Railroad Corporation," said Bang-Hyun Lim, Senior Vice President, Corporate Sales, LG Uplus. "The LG Uplus consortium will be helpful in operating safe rail services.”

Meanwhile, LG Uplus is taking the lead in spreading ESG management, such as joining the Korean RE100 (K-RE100) to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
