The popularity of using social networks in Korea, such as Facebook, is rising. However, many do not realize that what they post or activities they do on these sites could be potentially harmful. If used with caution, social networking is a great tool to get in touch with friends, colleagues, and even meet others from around the world. Keep the hobby of social networking positive by following these precautions:
- 1. Do not announce whereabouts. It would seem natural to update friends, family, and coworkers, but this act could put anyone at immediate risk for burglary.
- 2. Keep all personal information private. Identity thieves search for information such as birth dates, children's names, list of favorites, hometown, or any other information that could be used to gain access to private information.
- 3. Forget about taking any quizzes. Many do not realize that the questions that are asked could help identity thieves learn more that could unlock private information.
- 4. Watch your privacy settings. After first signing up, you may have put your privacy settings to the maximum possible; however, sites can change and access more of your information and gain the ability to publish it without your knowledge. For example, Facebook is currently publishing phone numbers.
If used correctly, social networking may open the doors to experiences that cannot be realized in the real world. Connections are made; expressions are created; and best of all, the opportunity to pass information among a large group of people is easier than ever before! Make sure this information is what you would want to share with others. Do not allow yourself to be a victim of a crime.
