While life science organizations have significantly reduced business costs in recent years, forward thinking companies continue to actively pursue additional opportunities to improve productivity and reduce costs across the enterprise. To help understand the impact on IT, IDC Health Insights today announced the availability of the annual Vendor Assessment: Top 10 Life Science Software Vendors report (Doc #HI225921), which identifies the top 10 software vendors serving the life science market. Oracle easily topped the chart for a second consecutive year, extending its life science software license revenue lead over all other vendors to $161 million.

"From an IT perspective, companies are undergoing significant application portfolio rationalization, software consolidation, and IT centralization to reduce redundancy across divisions and consolidate decision making. Software vendors that architect solutions to complement these needs will be most successful over the long term," said Eric Newmark, research manager, Business Systems Strategy at IDC Health Insights.

The new report includes both enterprise and specialty vendors. While Oracle maintained the number 1 position, SAP continued its stronghold on the number 2 spot, with a 5.6% market share and $170 million in life science software license revenue, and Accelrys moved into third place, holding a 5% market share and $150 million in life science software license revenue. SAS and Medidata round out the top 5 vendors, with $131 million and $116.2 million in revenue, respectively, concluding the only five vendors that currently exceed the $100 million threshold. Cegedim and PTC held firm in maintaining their inclusion in the top 10 list and were joined by three new vendors, including research-focused companies Thermo Fisher Scientific and Perceptive Informatics as well as contract and revenue management vendor iMANY.

"The ability to effectively access, use, and manage information will need to be a core competency of successful life science companies," said Alan S. Louie, research director, Clinical Development, Strategy and Technology at IDC Health Insights. "In the shadow of expiring patents, companies are actively looking to improve operational efficiencies and reduce costs. Top-tier software vendors, with interconnected best-of-breed software solutions, are increasingly the vendors of choice, as companies look to create sustainable IT environments that can efficiently and effectively help life science companies bring new drugs to market."

This year, the IDC Health Insights Top 10 life science software vendors list has been expanded to rank key industry subsegments, identifying top vendors from research, development, manufacturing and supply chain, and sales and marketing areas.
