The Vice-Minister of Environment Jung-ho Moon participates in the 26th session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), held from 21 to 24 February 2011 at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.
As a UNEPs biennial regular meeting, the Governing Council meeting has been held to discuss recent environmental issues, share each nations environmental policies and adopt a resolution with the participation by 58 member countries of the Governing Council, government representatives of observers, and representatives of international organizations and NGOs.
At the 26th session, UNEP plans to release a summary of Green Economy Report, which is to be published during this year. As a panel of the green economy session of the Global Ministerial Environment Forum, the Vice-Minister Moon will publicize Koreas performances on green growth policies including the followings :
- Building an institutional foothold for green growth by enacting 『Framwork Act on Low Carbon Green Growth』and establishing the Presidential Committee on Green Growth
- Setting the target of 30% reduction of greenhouse gas from BAU
- Carrying out greenhouse gas and energy target management system for 500 companies
- Opening the Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center
- Increasing distribution rate of new and renewable energy
In addition, the Vice-Minister Moon will release Koreas plan to contribute to international cooperation on environment through the East Asia Climate Partnership and the Global Green Growth Institute.
The Director of the OECD Environment Directorate Simon Upton(former New Zealand minister of environment) asked to meet the Vice-Minister Moon to discuss Koreas consistent cooperation on development of OECD green growth strategies.
Also, the Vice-Minister Moon plans to have a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Nature, Environment and Tourism of Mongolia Gansukh Luimed to discuss measures to enhance environmental cooperation between the two countires.
