3D Fusion Industry Association (3DFIA), chaired by Kim Gi-nam, held the 2011 General Assembly at the Electronics Hall in Sangam-dong on March 9, 2011, with about 130 people present including the association officials and delegates from member companies.

As a new paradigm for convergence industries, 3D is used in a broad range of Korea's key industries such as electronic information devices, contents, SW, and broadcasting services. And July 8, 2010, the major 3D companies including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics established 3DFIA in a bid to take the lead in creating a stepping stone for the next generation's 3D products that will solidify the country's 3D industries.

Since its inception, 3DFIA and its 126 member companies have made remarkable achievements in spurring the industry's development, which include hosting the World 3D Expo, forming the integrated roadmap for 3D industries, and signing a MOU with overseas 3D establishments, as well as carrying out a variety of projects that involve global standard technology, human factors and so on.

2010 marked the genesis of the 3D industries in the sense that the government began to make huge efforts by, for instance, setting up the 3D Industry Development Plans in October; executing the integrated technology roadmap; test-running 3D terrestrial broadcasts; and promoting new 3D-related businesses in order to lay the foundation for the domestic market and also precede in the global markets.

As for 2011, 3DFIA is planning to create and endorse convergence businesses that combine traditional technologies and cutting-edge 3D technologies and establish a systematic network between the academia and industry to produce new technologies through R&D. Furthermore, the association announced that they will make proposals to the government with respect to the issues and difficulties that the industry faces. In addition, it will carry out major projects such as collaborative marketing, global standardization, and international cooperation.

'3D Industry Applied Technologies Pilot Projects' in particular is aimed at creating new business models and, hence, suggesting new directions for the industry by converting conventional 2D-based businesses into 3D with higher added-value. To do so, close cooperation between the academia and industry for R&D is essential and 3DFIA is planning to seek further methods to maximize the profit of member companies, organizing conferences in the form of committees for different sectors of the industry and, based on the technology roadmap, executing the government R&D projects.

3DFIA had the 2011 General Assembly

By fostering professional workforce for the 3D convergence industry, the association will provide practical support via introduction of the latest 3D-related technologies for medical service, advertisement, civil engineering and construction, education, aerial survey, and information home appliances. Furthermore, the association will conduct research and development for standardization and human factors concerning 3D ergonomics, a vital factor for secure and steady growth of the industry.

Meanwhile, '3D Technology and Equipment Support Center' will provide technological support, equipment, and infrastructure that are required for smaller 3D businesses in Korea to make a successful market entry and reduce the lead time, which, in turn, will contribute to forming the support system for the industry in general.

3DFIA is also planning to organize the 'Global 3D Technology Standard Forum' to help lead technological development and discuss industry trends as well as to set the global standard by enhancing and expanding international cooperation with major 3D industry countries.

Although many difficulties are expected with respect to laws and regulations as the 3D convergence industry is being newly arranged, 3DFIA explained that the association will pay utmost attention to the businesses in terms of discovering issues and discussing them with relevant government authorities and experts.

Another priority of the association is to help companies that have cutting-edge technology, and yet, lack a marketing platform for collaborative marketing and international cooperation. The collaborative marketing strategy will be further strengthened by 3D-related special exhibitions and trade consultations.

Anticipating fierce competition among the companies to get the upper hand in the market in 2011, 3DFIA will focus on establishing the infrastructure and advancing 3D convergence technologies, while "enhancing its role as a comprehensive 3D industry support center" through collaborative marketing and international cooperation projects.

This year's General Assembly also saw changes in the articles of association and confirmation of the 2011 budget.
