Handysoft Constructs BPM System for Samsung Heavy Industries

Handysoft (www.handysoft.co.kr) completed the construction of a business process management (BPM) system for block outsourcing process management at Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje shipyard. As the outsourcing volume of major assemblies rapidly increased with the sharp increase in shipbuilding orders last year, Samsung Heavy Industries has driven the BPM construction project to efficiently manage the block outsourcing processes, applying the BPM solution from Handysoft.

The newly constructed shipbuilding block outsourcing management system covers the ordering, manufacturing, quantity, and process control of subcontractors. The system also improves the business processes relating to suppliers of the Geoje shipyard.

Through their system, Samsung Heavy Industries can visualize the flow of all business processes related to the manufacture of outsourced ship assemblies and take proper measures in real-time. The company optimizes its outsourcing management with the ability to quickly identify abnormal and delayed processes. Due to good results, the company plans to extend the BPM solution to its external process control system .

Handysoft expects the construction of the BPM system for Samsung Heavy Industries to strengthen its foothold in the domestic BPM market, estimated at 40 billion won this year, proving its outstanding technological competence in constructing BPM systems for large-scale companies.

Handysoft has been doing well in overseas markets including the United States, where the company operates a local subsidiary. It is also making good progress in the domestic market, participating in BPM construction projects for an increasing number of large companies such as Samsung Electronics, Hyundai-Kia Motors, ING Insurance and recently, LG Electronics.

Korea Storagetek Launches the SL8500 Tape Library

Korea Storagetek (www.storagetek.co.kr) launched "StreamLine SL8500" , a tape library of linear circular type to implement tape automation.

The newly launched StreamLine SL8500 features automatic migration, complete swap ability, and improved performance and capacity. By effectively sharing drives, the SL8500 integrates computing infrastructure ranging from middle to enterprise levels.

The automatic migration feature automatically moves old data to new cartridges to meet new customer policies. The disk buffer in front of the tape drive manages media errors. In addition, in case errors occur while moving data to tape, the SL8500 automatically backs up to other tape drivers or cartridges, thus providing more stable backups.

The swap function provides smooth installation and removal of drivers, robot check, and the upgrade of microcode without interrupting systems even when errors occur in power supply and robot because the SL8500 provides dual components, spare robot, power and electronic devices.

In particular, the SL8500 shares the drives efficiently to save the same quantity of data in a smaller number of drives and supports diverse platforms including Unix, Windows and Linux. The robot can handle more than 1,000 mounts per hour. Tape drivers operating diverse applications including LTO Gen2 and SDLT 600 can be installed.

Ahnlab Develops First Cure for Stealth Worms

Ahnlab developed an original technology called "Anti-stealth," the first in the world to completely diagnose and cure the AgoBot Worm. Existing security solutions have difficulty in coping with AgoBots written with a stealth technique.

The stealth technique has long been used to write malicious programs, even back in the DOS era. Virus programs written with the stealth technique hide themselves or ttheir real size. In Windows systems, the application program interface (API) hooking technique is commonly used by the stealth worm. The API is a language (or message) form used when application programs communicate with system programs such as operating systems.

API hooking means that the malicious program intercepts normal API and executes other jobs. For example, when an API is executed to find A.EXE file, the worm intercepts the API and makes a false report that there is no A.EXE file. Then, the system can't find the A.EXE file. API hooking was recently upgraded to allow the worm to reach the system memory through the repetition of API hooking. This upgraded technique was used in the AgoBot worm for the first time.

The Agobot worm was first written in 2002. With the release of the source code, about 1,000 variations have been written so far. The AgoBot worm is spread through the diverse vulnerabilities of Windows.

Once succeeding in infiltration, the AgoBot worm tries to access to the IRC server and increase internal network traffic excessively, and in severe cases, paralyzes the internal network. Using the stealth technique, it hides its existence when the worm file is executed.

The Anti-Stealth technology developed by Ahnlab diagnoses and cures the repetitive execution of AgoBot worm with stealths techniques on the memory. So far, the registry value has to be manually changed whenever infected. In particular, when corporate servers are infected with this worm, they influence all PCs linked to them only to paralyze whole network or interrupt normal daily business. One excellent feature: Anti-Stealth does not require re-booting after fixing the problem, thereby insuring the availability of servers and networks.

Even the big three leading the global markets have yet to implement this technology. With the development of the technique, Ahnlab demonstrated its technological competence in both domestic and global markets.

The company is considering a patent application for the new technique. The company has already applied the technique to the dedicated AgoBot vaccine and provided it to customers. Since May 2004, the technique has been built into V3Pro 2004.

"The techniques applied to malicious code have become more sophisticated. If the latest stealth techniques are used for such nasty worms as the Sasser, the damage will be disastrous," said Hong Seung-chang, General Director of Development Division of Ahnlab. "If PCs and even servers infected with worms are not completely cured, networks can be paralyzed. The newly developed Anti-Stealth technique will provide epochmaking countermeasures for the safety of customers' networks."

Confident of its technological ability, Ahnlab's strategy is to become one of the top ten security companies in the world by 2010.

LG IBM Makes Inroads into Small-and Medium-sized Server Market

As the small and medium-sized server market has emerged as the source of the largest new demand recently, LG IBM (www.lgibm.co.kr) began to actively target the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market.

LG IBM supplies the newly launched "eServer x225," an Intel-based 2-way server serving the SMB market including hospitals and schools, at the price of \1.99 million from June 26 to July 30 this year.

The eServer x225 adopts a 2.8GHz Intel Xeon processor, 512MHz FSB (front system bus) and 512MB memory to process complex problems without bottlenecks. Seven built-in hard drives provide data storage capacity of up to 880GB, eliminating the need for external storage devices.

The controller provides integrated management of communication and drive status. The hot-swap function allows components to be replaced during system operation. LG IBM explained that the 'eServer x225' featured outstanding stability from the technologies applied to the small- to large-sized servers.

Together with the 'eServer x225', LG IBM also supplies the SATA type x206, a 1-way server, at KRW990,000 and the ultra SCSI type model with built-in storage expandable to 587GB at KRW1.35 million. The servers are available at the Web site (www.lgibm.co.kr), sole agents and through 'x Family', the indirect sales channel of LG IBM. "LG IBM supplied over 500 servers in April through the 'eServer x206' discount event, which found that customers using assembled servers decided to purchase primarily because of the stability of our products and services," said Cho Sang-ryeol, Director of the System Business Division of LG IBM. "LG IBM plans to expand the sale of small-sized servers through diverse promotional campaigns because of positive growth potential and brand awareness effects, despite the tiny profit."

Hyosung Information System Constructs Integrated Storage System for KTNet.

H>yosung Information System (HIS www.his21.co.kr) successfully completed the construction of integrated storage systems for KTnet (www.ktnet.co.kr).

HIS explained that the integrated storage system was constructed with the Lightning 9980V, a high-end, high performance storage product which can be expanded to a maximum of 147.5Tb, to efficiently deal with continuously increasing data, expand SAN environments and improve storage performance.

In particular, the concept of data life cycle management (DLM) was applied to the construction of the integrated system. In DLM, important data is managed by the newly installed Lightning 9980V while data with relatively less importance is dealt with by existing storage lines.

"KTNet designated HIS as a new business partner because of their storage solutions with excellent expandability and performance, and due to their accumulated technologies," said Kin Seong-eop, a team leader of HIS. "We will actively provide support for the construction of DLM and the disaster restoration center."

Daou Data Systems to Provide Technology to IT College Project in Vietnam

Aspecialty IT solution vendor, Daou Data Systems signed a contract with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to provide technology service to the Korea-Vietnam IT College project.

According to the contract, Daou Data Systems was picked as an ISP (information service provider) to draw up a master plan for the projected Korea-Vietnam Sisterhood IT College, which will be built in Danang, central Vietnam, as part of ODA (overseas development assistance) plan pledged when Vietnamese Prime Minister visited Korea in September last year.

The project is to establish a three-year IT college, not the common IT training center, and offers the BM-ISP consulting method. This is an important business to support domestic IT firms' overseas spread and improve the nation's visibility in international society. The project will cost a total of $20 million and be completed by 2007.

Daou Data Systems will play a major role in the KOICA's new business in 2004 to build IT College, ranging from business plan setup to comprehensive master plan to seek effective college operational processes. The contracts total 150 million won and the sales will increase additional through 2007. Daou Data Systems has maintained business relations with Vietnam since 2002. Then Vietnamese government officials and businessmen and representatives from academia visited Daou in Seoul, solidifying business ties.

Ahn Lab., Softrun Forge Biz Tie-up to Cooperate in Security Patch Management

Information security specialist, Ahn Lab. Inc. and patch management system company, Softrun exchanged a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore security patch management market and find new markets.

The strategic alliance pact calls for solidified cooperative systems in marketing and technology development. To this end, the two firms agreed to exchange marketing rights for each other's flagship items, share key information and seek technological cooperation by setting up hot lines. New market creation through linking virus vaccines and patch management solutions is also a main focus.

Through partnership with a security patch management specialist, Ahn Lab secured a preparation process for security vulnerability at the time when bad codes abusing security weak points are rampant. The two companies will have a sharper competitive advantage as a specialized security firm by overcoming limits of vaccine programs -- post-response system -- and tapping the possibility to find new revenue model.

Kim Chul Soo, Ahn Lab vice president, said that the patch management system is an effective supplementary scheme for the vaccine programs as worms and viruses that take advantage of security vulnerabilities can not be eradicated completely by vaccine programs unless security patches were installed. "Together with the Virus Blockage Service (VBS) which has worked effectively, the business alliance with Softrun will help us have a cutting edge in both prior and post security services," he added.

As the two leaders in the vaccine program and security patch management sectors joined hands, they will benefit from a synergy effect depending on various cooperative schemes such as co-branding, industry observers said.

Hitec RCD Korea Kicks Off ERP System Build-up

Aradio controller manufacturer, Hitec RCD Korea introduced an Microsoft's ERP solution 'Axapta', through MS's global partner Enterprise Solutions Group Korea (ESG), kicking off ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system building. The 10-month project, starting in May aims to set up an integrated ERP system for Hitech RCD Group by linking affiliates in the Philippines, Germany and the United States to the headquarters in Korea.

Established in 1973 as an OEM (original equipment manufacturing)-based electronics parts supplier, Hitech RCD Korea focuses on producing and selling main product, R/Cs. As a result of aggressive overseas market exploration, has 15 percent of the global R/C market, ranking third in the world, with the help of production and sales offshoots in the Philippines, the U.S. and Germany.

Park Hyun-woo, a director general of the company's quality management division, said that against the general consideration that the more ERP products add functions, the more the system is complicated, Axapta is not complex, though it provides all the functions needed and thus is very convenient to use.

This product will progress in three phases, in cooperation between companies in Korea, the Philippines, Germany and the US, and be completed by March 2005. The first phase of work aims to reduce group's logistics costs and improve consumer satisfaction through streamlining logistics systems of companies of the group. The second phase sees the improvement of financial and accounting management and the third phase eyes the finalization of the integrated system under construction for the Hitech RCD Group.

CA Korea Opens Busan Office

Computer Associates Korea (CA Korea) inaugurated a Busan Office on May 7 in order to increase contact with customers in the South Gyeongsang and Busan areas to improve consumer satisfaction levels.

The Busan office is located in 12th floor of Korea Express building near Joongang-dong subway station. With an initial staff of just two including the office head, the new body plans to expand its business area and payroll gradually. CA Korea president, Ji-il Sang, said that with the opening of Busan office, the company hopes to collect diverse demands from customers in Busan and South Gyeongsang areas and meet them promptly. "I'm very pleased that CA's business motto, 'Helping customers catch up in a fast changing environment and assisting their success and development,'has materialized."

In the wake of the Busan office opening, CA Korea plans to forge business tie-ups with more regional manufacturers in Busan and major cities in South Kyongsang Proviince such as Ulsan, Pohang, Masan and Changwon.

Services will improve to existing customers such as Pusan Bank, Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction, Hyundai Heavy Industries. Through regular technology education to a channel company in the Busan-South Kyongsang area, Shinhwa Information & Communications, it will seek enhanced technology and consulting capability.

Hauri to Enter Patch Management Solution Business

Computer virus vaccination and data restoration program developer Hauri plans to advance into the patch management solution sector, which manages worm attacks and other targets of hackers automatically without rebooting computers, the company said.

As various kinds of worms attack the vulnerability in Microsoft security patches and utilize them as an extension path, the importance of weak patches has been stressed more than ever. But users' negligence of this point has left much to be desired. The Slammer worm was the major culprit behind an Internet mishap on January 25, 2003, and the Blaster Worm made millions of PCs reboot every sixty seconds in August last year. The Agobot worm and its variants most recently caused businesses extensive damage. These incidents have proven the vulnerability of MS security patches.

On this matter, Hauri president, Kwon Suk-chul, said that the purpose of the production and spread of viruses is to infect as many unsuspecting users and worms are designed to enter and work in a computer automatically even if users don't do anything. The patch management solution that Hauri developed searches for computers lacking security patches and automatically downloads and implements needed patches. In addition, users don't have to reboot computers to adopt patches. The new development will be especially welcomed by domestic and foreign companies which have not installed proper patches and suffered from worm attacks.

To take an upper hand in this business, Hauri is devoted to developing various versions of its patch management solutions, and has made laborious efforts to develop differentiated technology and products. Last year, Hauri exported a vaccine to apply to industrial equipment-related technology of Intel of the United States.

MS Korea Accelerates Entry into SME, Public Sectors

Microsoft Korea plans to introduce a program for ISVs (independent software vendors) which are developing solutions and doing business based on MS's platforms. The "ISV Royalty Program", which will be introduced in 2005 starting in June, will be available to MS solution partners. Under the ISV Royalty Program, MS solution partners will be entitled to have the right to issue licenses for all MS servers except Windows servers. Through this, the partner companies will be supplied MS servers directly, rather than through re-sellers as has been the case so far. In addition, server prices will be cut by 48 percent on average compared to ordinary purchasing prices, helping the solution partners secure price competitiveness.

The ISV Royalty Program is Microsoft Korea's latest strategy to accelerate its entry into the market for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) having less than 800 PCs, and public companies. Lee Sang-wook, an assistant section chief of MS Korea and planner of this program, said that the ISV Royalty Program addressed the disadvantages of existing solutionsupplying practices. Some independent vendors supplied solutions available for the fewest possible users in order to reduce costs, forcing customers to expand capability afterwards and to sometimes buy illegal versions. The ISV Royalty Program will go a long way toward solving these problems, he added.

CD Networks Develops High-Quality Moving Picture Service Solution

CD Networks, a content delivery network (CDN) specialist, has developed a Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution, "Media DRM", which helps block illegal copying of digital source content on the Internet. DRM encrypts digital content such as education, music and movies in order to keep it from being copied illegally. The company said that illegal program copying and distribution reached a serious level as most of the streaming content providers do not accept DRM technology at present. This stands in the way of introducing paid service for digital content.

The Media DRM is based on a DRM solution exclusively for a high-quality moving picture transmission service called Nefficient eXtream and applied the best technology for Windows Media Video (WMV)-type moving pictures. Before users get access to the Media DRM-applied content, they should go through an approval and settlement process for encoded content and then be given a "key" to use for decoding. Users can still access illegally recorded or distributed content without a password key.

The Media DRM also provides additional security functions such as the designation of a expiration date of content use, limits on frequency of use and designation of distribution rights.

CD Networks plans to supply Media DRM to some 200 customers of its Nefficient CDN service. With the development of Media DRM, the company is looking forward to upgrade its security services together with existing duplicated ID blockage, illegal link prevention and an anti-prerecorded program service, "Media Auth."

Future Systems Signs 5th Contract for VPN with Nonghyup Bank

An information protection firm, Future Systems, has signed fifth contract to build virtual private networks (VPN) systems worth \2.4 billion with Nonghyup Bank. Nonghyup Bank has built VPN systems from 2002 to secure continuity in computer work and improve network efficiency. Nonghyup Future Systems has established VPN systems in 3,500 branches through fourth contracts in 2002 and 2003. The fifth contract calls for linking 1,000 regional headquarters and branches through the VPN systems. Future Systems will supply SecuwayGate 1000 and SecuwayGate 100 for which the company won endorsement from the National Intelligence Service in April.

Future Systems carried out VPN projects for National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, the Korea Exchange Bank, KorAm Bank, Industrial Bank of Korea, SK Life Insurance, Tongyang Life Insurance, Kyobo Life, Metro Life, Kookmin Bank, Dongbu Fire & Marine Insurance, Mirae Asset Securities and Shinheung Securities.

IBM Opens Ubiquitous Computing Laboratory in Seoul on June 30

IBM recently announced that it opened the IBM Ubiquitous Computing Laboratory (UCL) which will focus on telematics and embedded software. IBM UCL started operations on June 30, with a 400-pyeong sized lab office at the 23rd floor of the Millennium Building, Dogok-dong, Seoul. IBM Korea is located in the same building.

With R&D projects awarded from the Institute of Information Technology Assessment (IITA) and IBM Korea, IBM UCL will focus on R&D activities in the area of Telematics and Embedded software, the core areas of ubiquitous computing over the four years.

For this mission, a total 50 technical staff including 25 engineers who used to work for relevant R&D tasks at the existing IBM Korea Technology Lab (KTL) will be fully dedicated to R&D activities in the area of telematics and embedded software at the IBM UCL.

Attendees at the opening ceremony included Chin Dae - je, minister of Information and Communication, Kim Taehyun , president of the Institute of Information Technology Assessment (IITA), Tony Romero, president and CEO of IBM Korea, and some 40 visitors from the government and the industry.

"The ubiquitous computing which IBM UCL is developing is a very important part of the government's 'IT 8-3-9' strategic growth plan. I expect IBM UCL to contribute to reinforcing Korea's leadership in the future Telematics and Embedded Software through advanced R&D activities in the area of ubiquitous computing maximizing IBM's advanced technology", commented Minister Chin.

"Congratulations on IBM UCL's successful opening! I look forward to earning advanced technologies competitive enough both in domestic as well as overseas market from IBM UCL's meaningful R&D activities," commented IITA President Kim.

Ubiquitous computing, also known as pervasive computing, provides personalized mobile computing power enabling information access anywhere, anytime, on demand.

Telematics is a total information service to equip drivers with wireless voice and data communications based on location positioning and two-way telecommunication technologies. Through this technology, the drivers can utilize various mobile services such as traffic information, emergency handling information, remote vehicle diagnosis, online financial transactions, news and e-mail.

Embedded Software is software mounted onto daily life devices and systems to make them function smoothly. As networks and devices become increasingly more complicated, faster, more wireless and less power-consuming, improvement of technologies, designs and management skills of embedded software is crucial.
