With a view to commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity, May 22, the Ministry of Environment declared the Biodiversity Week (May 16 to 22) and plans to hold nationwide events. Besides a celebration for the International Day for Biological Diversity, the ministry holds a groundbreaking ceremony for the National Institute of Nakdong River Biological Resources on May 19.
The celebration will be attended by about 1,000 including the Minister of Environment Lee Maanee and the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity Ahmed Djoghlaf. The Executive Secretary Ahmed Djoghlaf is expected to give a presentation on the background and meaning of the UN's kicking off a 10 year strategy to protect biodiversity in October 2010. In addition, the ceremony will be accompanied by exhibitions and education on biodiversity and a groundbreaking ceremony for the National Institute of Nakdong River Biological Resources.
The ministry designated one week from May 16 to 22 as the biodiversity week to raise public awareness of the significance of biodiversity and plans to hold various events at the national level in cooperation with local governments and research institutes. In particular, a symposium on the Nagoya Protocol, an international meeting on biodiversity and eco-tour will be held.
The ministry and the National Institute of Biological Resources made a slogan and themes on biodiversity and will spread them all over the nation. The slogan is 'Let's Go for Biodiversity!' and the themes are 'Protect biodiversity!" "Learn biodiversity!" and "Enjoy biodiversity!"
