South Korea ranked at the bottom among the worlds advanced countries in terms of adapting to climate change and energy independence, Yonhap news agency reported citing a report revealed Tuesday.
A research team lead by Kim Jong-ho of the state-funded Korea Environment Institute created their own index to measure Seouls green growth policies and compared 30 member states of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) based on its 2007 statistics.
Seoul received the lowest points in the category of adaptation to climate change and energy independence among the 30 countries, with Japan and the United States ranked 28th and 29th, respectively, according to the study. Norway topped the list, followed by Iceland and Sweden. "South Korea sits at the bottom because it has depended heavily on fossil fuels for economic growth, but the supply of renewable energy has been very low," Kim said.
