Researchers from Sweden's KTH Royal Institute of Technology are looking into employing energy efficiency techniques in buildings by managing its ventilation system.

The group headed by network-engineering professor Karl Henrik Johansson, with scientist Seyed Alireza Ahmadi, is currently developing a conference room fitted with an information system that can adjust its heating and cooling systems in relation to the number of persons inside it. It can be switched off when no one is using the conference room.

Mr. Johansson plans to expand the information-based energy efficient system at a larger scale. "This can then be scaled up and applied to the entire building. This exemplifies how we can ensure energy-efficient buildings in the future," Mr. Johansson said. The professor is aiming at using identification systems fitted with sensors so that the building will know where a person is, and will eventually turn on the ventilation in the specific area where the person is located.

He adds that another way of saving energy is to locate buildings or houses close to industries to be able to use the waste heat they generate. "Note that by year 2020, we must be able to save 20 percent of buildings' energy consumption according to the E.U. [European Union] directives laid down. Much of that must be done through more intelligent buildings," Mr. Johansson said.

According to the E.U. Commission, buildings are responsible for 40 percent of the total energy consumption and 36 percent of carbon emissions of the E.U. There are also directives at the E.U. level which say that there must be big reductions in the energy consumption of buildings over the next decade.

The E.U. came up with the directive on energy performance of buildings in May last year, which requires energy performance of new and existing buildings, ensure the certification of their energy performance and require the regular inspection of boilers and air conditioning systems in buildings.
