Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan will visit Hungary June 5-7 for the 10th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held in Budapest as well as for a state visit. The Meeting will take place June 6-7 with Foreign or acting Foreign Ministers of the 48 ASEM member states, including Korea.

In the Meeting themed "Working Together on Non-traditional Security Challenges," the participants will hold in-depth discussions on a wide range of issues facing the international community, which include non-traditional security issues, natural disasters and their management, nuclear safety, climate change, global economic crisis, UN reform, and human rights. They will also exchange comprehensive views on the global and regional situation. The outcome of the Meeting will be laid out in a chairman's statement, which will be adopted just before the Meeting comes to a close.

ASEM is the world's largest regional consultative framework bringing Asia and Europe together, and a useful multilateral arena where Korea can strengthen diplomacy vis-à-vis Asia and Europe. By attending the Meeting, Korea expects to see tangible achievements as below:

  • Active participation in discussions on such global issues as climate change and the financial crisis,
and stronger policy cooperation with the other member states in this regard
  • Winning international support for ROK's North Korea policies aimed at maintaining peace and stability on the Korean peninsula
  • Bolstering relations with ASEM's major member countries through bilateral meetings

While in Hungary for the ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Minister Kim will pay a state visit to the country to make a courtesy call on the President and meet with his Hungarian counterpart. He will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from major member countries of ASEM, such as China and Indonesia, for discussions on bilateral and other issues of mutual concern.
