Minnesota, USA -June 29, 2011 - Without any notice or publicity, Google recently launched a new service that throws 20 of its current products on to one page, currently known as the WDYL (what do you love) page. Although it is unlikely that it will replace the tradition search engine page that already exists, it emphasizes the importance of evolving search engines to improve usability and diverse search results; not everyone realizes the different types of content that can be specified in 'search', so WDYL almost introduces users to the products that Google already has.

The homepage of WDYL is clean and crisp just like the Google homepage; it keeps the 'clutter' to a minimum that can still be seen on most search engines today. It is evident that Google wants to maintain its user-friendly reputation by reducing the instance of possible confusion; the only things that appear on the page are gray words in the middle of the page asking, "what do you love From Google" where a nearly invisible search bar is placed beneath with a cute blue heart button -the equivalent of the 'search' button in the Google homepage.

In the first test run, I searched the keyword 'camera' -since I knew that I should find relevant results in all of Google's products that are present on the page. It conveniently created an access point where I could go to anything ran by Google such as YouTube, SketchUp, Patent Search, Books, Picasa, Earth, and much more. I was particularly attracted to the SketchUp image where I could view a camera in 3D; a service that I would have otherwise forgotten exists.

The lack of word content on the initial page results is valuable for the user who just wants to figure out what type of content he or she wants to find. Although the traditional search 'web' on Google is convenient as well, WDYL takes away the scrolling through multiple search results that consist of all writing -which used to create a lot of moments where users will go to another website and need to go 'back' to the search page again.

Although the reason for Google not promoting this new page is unclear, the popularity is certain to grow due to the spread of word. Perhaps Google is trying a new marketing strategy which consists of no marketing at all. After all, most say that a word that travels by mouth is most likely to be heard; we trust our friends, family, and of course our news sources to give us the 'dirt' that we like best.
