Korea NCR: Main Contractor for Kolon's EDW Project

Kolon Group recently decided on Korea NCR (www.ncr.co.kr) as the main consulting and systems contractor for its enterprise data warehouse (EDW) project. Kolon announced that the project was based on their decision that an integrated enterprise-level data environment was required to quickly and efficiently respond to market changes and support their decision-making process after the implementation of ERP software.

For the Kolon EDW project, NCR plans to supply its Teradata Manufacturing Logical Data Model. The MLDM provides a blueprint for building an enterprise data warehouse that spans critical business process areas including supply chain management, financial management and customer management. It also expedites timeto-value while creating a consistent view of the data across the enterprise.

With the project, Kolon expects to provide a user interface to allow customers to answer unique business questions at the deepest level, while at the same time enabling them to use key performance indicators to measure and better manage their businesses.

"The EDW project is expected to enable Kolon Group with the strategic organizational intelligence competence to develop its synthetic fiber and industrial material manufacturing businesses into a high-tech industrial material businesses," said Jeong Yong-su, chief of the Kolon e-Vision Team. "Kolon plans to achieve improved management targets including financial integration, inventory optimization and stable channel sales."

Intel Korea to Reinforce ntel Teach to the Future' Program

ntel Korea (www.intel.com/kr) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity & Promotion (KADO) to reinforce its ntel Teach to the Futureprogram and provide training for more than 2,000 teachers from domestic elementary, middle and high schools on how to encourage learning motivation of students using technology, all by the end of this year.

Teach to the Future is a training program for teachers that Intel provides all over the world. With the program, Intel supports teachers to efficiently connect technologies to curricula to promote education.

Through the training program, teachers learn from other teachers how to integrate science and technology into their teaching plans. The program also teaches goal-oriented education through a series of evaluation standards. The program includes the Internet, Web page design and how to use multimedia software. Intel Korea has provided the training program for 18,000 teachers since 2002 in cooperation with the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development and local educational boards.

"In the age of technology, it is very important for students to learn the right technology properly," said Kim Myeong-chan, CEO of Intel Korea. "Intel supports teachers to effectively utilize technologies in real classes to promote the education of students."

"To successfully live in a knowledge-based economy society, it is essential for students to develop strong thinking power," said Son Yeonki, president of KADO. "Information and telecommunication technology plays very important roles in the learning procedure of students if teachers understand when, where, and how to apply information and telecommunication technology through the Intel training program, the information gap in our society can be narrowed." Intel has used the Teach to the Future program as a way to educate more than 1.5 million teachers in 30 countries since 2000.

Softforum, Supplying Increasing Number of Security Mail Solutions

Softforum (www.softforum.com) is enjoying increased business in supplying secure mail solutions to securities companies. Recently, the company added Dongwon Securities, Dongbu Securities and Hantu Securities to their list of customers.

Since the end of last year, when the Financial Supervisory Service announced guidelines on the security of internal messages and e-mail, an increasing number of securities companies has bought Softforum's products. Last year Softforum supplied products to Daewoo Investment and Securities and LG Securities.

Securities companies deliver sensitive information such as account status, balance, and available cash for orders via e-mail to customers using their home trading systems (HTSs). Without proper security procedures including encryption, these e-mails cannot be free from the threat of hacking.

Softforum supplies a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)-based mail security solution, called XecureExpress which can be integrated into diverse marketing e-mail systems. The solution encodes e-mails and attached files to prevent forgery and alterations, and enables user authentication.

"As e-mail becomes an increasingly important method of communication and marketing, the security of personal information has grown in importance," said Jeong Hyeoncheol, vice president of Softforum. "It is expected that the demand for mail security solutions from financial entities will continue to increase."

EMC Korea, Allows Disaster-Proof On-Line Banking >> Kookmin Bank Successfully Switches from Backup to Main Computer Center, Records 1.55 Million Transactions

Korea EMC (www.korea.emc.com) announced that Kookmin Bank successfully provided banking services during a holiday using EMC's disaster relief backup system for the first time in Korea. To secure power for the stable operation of its computing system, Kookmin Bank had to change its outworn power facilities.

During the change, Kookmin Bank stopped the operation of its main computation center. The bank successfully provided on-line banking services for 18 hours during a holiday using a backup center system with duplicated data from EMC's disaster relief system.

"Running normal banking services using a disaster relief system was unprecedented," said an official of Kookmin Bank. "The highly reliable computer system, several self-tests and accumulated technical competence enabled uninterrupted banking services. Kookmin Bank will always do its best to minimize service downtime and prevent data loss."

Samsung Mall Constructs DB and DW to Maximize Customer Satisfaction

Korea Sun Microsystems (www.kr.sun.com) supplied its high performance and high-end server, the un Fire E25Kto construct the database and data warehouse for Samsung Mall business division of Samsung Corporation. Samsung Mall said it decided to construct a Sun Fire E25K- based system in consideration of performance, efficient operation and the total cost of ownership.

Samsung Mall expects the construction of database and data warehouse to enable the faster customer services, and improve the convenience of system management and operation and the productivity. Implementing the Sun system environment of DB servers and portals based on the Sun Fire E25K with high reliability and expandability, Samsung Mall plans to provide a platform to maximize profitability and customer satisfaction.

"Samsung Mall replaced the existing Sun Fire E10K with the Sun Fire E25K to handle the huge traffic expected in the future, provide efficient business processes and reduce operation costs," said Choi Dong-chul, Director of Korea Sun Microsystems. "Based on the successful construction of Samsung Mall, Korea Sun Microsystems plans to launch further marketing and sales activities to take larger share in the online business markets which are forecast to see continuous growth."

Korea Microsoft: Recruiting Business Partners for Small Companies

With the start of the 2005 fiscal year in July, Korea Microsoft is recruiting business partners specializing in the small company market.

Korea Microsoft concluded that existing partnership programs focusing on large-sized and medium-sized companies were not proper for small businesses such as business associations, drug stores, bookstores, gas stations and convenience stores that have a deep interest in IT systems. Korea Microsoft has held a conference for the new partnership program and launched a new partnership system specializing in small businesses.

Korea Microsoft plans to recruit special developers with solutions for small businesses and resellers with small business licensed-sales competence. The designated partners will handle integrated package solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), Small Business Servers (SBS) consisting of Windows servers, SQL servers and exchange servers, or supply Microsoft Association Agreement (AA) licenses.

Korea Microsoft will provide a database of potential customers and sales and technology training for its Microsoft Small Business Partners (MSBPs). It also provides support to marketing events and sales.

Handysoft, Increases Groupware Solution Sales

Handysoft (www.handysoft.co.kr), a groupware supplier, signed an agreement to supply groupware solutions for the Korea Agricultural & Rural Infrastructure Corporation's (KARICO) new electronic document system. KARICO saw a need to upgrade its existing electronic document system (groupware) by constructing a data management system for the circulation of internally generated electronic documents. The groupware suppliers expect special orders from 40 or so government-invested corporations and organizations which have to construct electronic document systems. The number of licensed users of KARICOsupplied software has reached 5,000.

"In compliance with the new business affairs administrative law, about 700 governmental public organizations completed electronic document systems early this year," said Kim Gyu-dong, CEO of Handysoft. "Recently, governmentinvested corporations and organizations have begun to systemize. Handysoft expects promising business results in relation to the special demand in the second half this year."

Last year, Handysoft supplied its groupware to 160 local governments out of 248, taking a more than 60 percent market share. In particular, a significant portion of orders came from their "Win Back" program, an effort to prove the strong competitiveness of their solutions and their table service support system. The company said the supply of its solutions to the KARICO was also another case of a "win back" over a largescale domestic systems integration provider.

KISA and MS Sign Definitive Agreement on Improvement of Computer Security

Korea Information Security Agency (KISA) (www.kisa.or.kr) and Microsoft (MS) signed a definitive agreement to enhance cooperation in the the software security field, based on an MOU for the improvement of computer security in November last year.

The KISA and MS have a consensus that the creation of a safe computing environment is the most important task in the digital age. The Internet provides a digital world with limitless possibility and opportunity, but is vulnerable to the vicious attacks such as hacking and viruses. The government has improved the safety of the Internet environment through diverse cooperation with computer virus vaccine experts and telecommunication service providers such as ISPs.

The definitive agreement between KISA and MS includes support for the Center for System Vulnerability Analysis, security education and training and joint efforts to prevent spam mail.

"One of the primary task of the MS would improve the security and reliability of the computing environment and protect global Microsoft customers from vicious attack," said Scott Charney, general manager of the Strategy Headquarters of Microsoft. "Microsoft is going to work in close relationship with IT industrial circles, customers, and governmental organizations in charge of computing security."

'The 1st Korea-Germany Industrial Technology Cooperation Committee'

The 1st Korea-Germany Industrial Technology Cooperation Committee Meeting was held at the Sorak Room, Ritz Carlton Hotel on 19th-20th, July 2004.

The purpose of this committee is to develop the world's best technology and products through strategic technological cooperation between Korea and Germany by an efficient blending of Germany's advanced science technology and Korea's manufacturing technology. Rim Kwan, chairman of the Korean side of the committee, said through his greetings that in November 2003, the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) agreed to establish the "Germany-Korea Industrial Technology Cooperation Committee" to enhance the exchange of industrial technology between Germany and Korea. He added that this committee will set the direction and goal to the technological cooperation that will result in the benefit of both nations.

The chairman of the German side noted, "Together with our government representatives, it will be our task for the next years to discuss, evaluate and support measures and projects to speed up the technology transfer and innovation process for the benefit of Korea and Germany." AMD Announces Mobile 64-bit Processor

Like all AMD 64-bit processors, the newest mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor offers an EVP (Enhanced Virus Protection) security function for the upcoming MS Window XP service pack 2. Moreover, AMD has announced the commercialization of the mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor 2200+. AMD explained that this product's launch marks the birth of a convertible tablet PC equipped with the first mobile AMD Athlon processor, for users who demand ultra-portable performance.

AMD said that the company plans to offer a processor for dynamic convertible tablet PCs, following the provision of notebooks with 64- bit processors, as well as dynamic electric power control capacity for the first time. AMD executives added that the company is continuously breaking through performance boundaries, offering the latest solutions to customers who don't want to sacrifice computing power. At present, the AMD Athlon 64 processor3400+ and mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor 2200+ are supplied globally.

IR Korea Expands Workforce, Facility Investments in Wales

Alocal subsidiary of a worldrenowned power-supplying semiconductor company, International Rectifier Korea (IR Korea) expanded its employment in Newport, Wales, and doubled local production capacity recently.

The facility investment highlights the introduction of 200mm (8-inch) wafer production lines, which the company hopes will create 120 engineering and production jobs which need highly skilled technology. Most of the new employees will be placed in its strategic HVIC (highvoltage insulating coating) sector. Based on this, IR Korea plans to expand its business alliance with Newport to next generation HVIC and advanced lowvoltage element furnaces.

Alex Lidow, CEO of IR, said that IRNewport is equipped with the most advanced facilities of the company, and is a very strategic business. After the acquisition, the company invested $66 million in expanding 150mm facilities and employed 100 more workers. He said that in cooperation with Wales and the European Union and with a strong partnership between the Welsh Parliament and the Welsh Development Agency, the company is advancing its expansion schedule. The best environment and strong market demand helped push its decision to expand to 200mm facilities, he added.

Futuresystem 'SecuwayGate 3000' Receives CC Authentication

Futuresystem (www.future.co.kr), an information protection firm, has acquired international common criteria (CC) authentication for its SecuwayGate 3000 VPN/firewall integration solution from Korea's National Intelligence Service. Since Futuresystem already received authentication for their "SecuwayGate 2000" they only needed a change approval for their 3000 product. The new product has the same security function with a better data rate.

SecuwayGate 3000, a 1-gigabit VPN/firewall integration solution, was launched in May 2004 to go after the one gigabit firewall niche. Futuresystem plans to aggressively go after corporations, public institutions, and financial institutions that have been hesitating to introduce firewalls due to the high cost of 2-gigabit firewalls.

Aya Korea Lands Major IP Call Center Project from Good Morning Shinhan Securities

Avaya Korea Ltd., the Korean subsidiary of Avaya Inc., a leading global provider of business communications software, systems and services for businesses, announced that it has won the IP contact center project for Good Morning Shinhan Securities in concert with Locus Technologies. HP Korea and Samsung Networks are also participating.

The Good Morning Shinhan Securities project is the first case in the local financial industry in which the main customer support center and branch offices will be connected and deployed based on IP telephony. With this project win, Avaya is expected to upgrade its position once again in the local IP telephony industry.

For this project, Avaya will provide Good Morning Shinhan Securities with elements of its MultiVantage Communications Applications portfolio which provides the ideal solution for IP contact centers including Avaya Communication Manager, Avaya S8700 Media Server, Avaya Interaction Center, IP telephones, etc. On the other hand, HP Korea and Locus will work on on implementing the connection of the main customer support center and branch offices nationwide.

Starting with the upgrading of a 200-seat main customer support center to an IP-based contact center, the project will connect the investment consulting group and larger branch offices to operate in a single IP-based infrastructure. In addition, the CTI infrastructure of the main customer support center and branch offices will be linked so that they can be operated as one large, single, virtual customer support center.

The IP contact center deployment across the whole company will allow Good Morning Shinhan Securities to share and manage customer information between the main customer support center and branches, enabling more efficient contact center management as well as more consistent and enhanced customer service. Moreover, the cost of telephone circuits will be reduced considerably as the main customer support center and the branches will be connected with IP telephony.

Kwak Byung-ju, deputy manager of the Good Morning Shinhan Securities customer support center, said, "We wanted to introduce the IPbased contact center for better customer service and cost-effective operation between the main customer support center and branch offices." He added, "Avaya's IP contact center solutions had the best performance and reliability as well as various features and scalability among all competing solutions participating in the bidding. In addition, interoperability with systems of Shinhan Financial Group affiliates was also highly rated."
