KEI Holds an International Symposium 'Water Security & Cities of the Future'

Current status of water shortage (2001, Fiske and Yoffe)

Research center for economics, humanities and social sciences and the Korea Environment Institute jointly held an international symposium under the theme 'Water Security & Cities of the Future' at the Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Seoul on July 19. Following the international symposium on 'Climate Change and Water Security' last year, the second symposium was held to make countermeasures against record-breaking drought, flood, water pollution and deterioration of biodiversity caused by climate change.

At the symposium, eminent experts from home and abroad gave presentations on diverse issues including Low Impact Development, waterfront city planning, and water quality modeling, etc. in an attempt to raise understanding of water security and make a plan to build cities of the future adapting to climate change. Delivering a keynote address, Abdel Fattah Metawie, Chairperson of the Nile Water Sector, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt said the necessity of managing water crisis had been increased owing to water conflict by water shortage in mega cities and tsunami, earthquake and typhoon. He also emphasized the importance of peaceful use of water.

Professor Steven C. Chapra from the Tufts University, U.S. also gave a keynote address and mentioned the importance of water quality modeling in civil and environmental engineering and suggested direction for development of water quality modeling by which interaction among water pollutant discharge, influence on ecosystem and waterborne epidemic can be comprehensively researched. In the session I and II, professors from Korea, the U.S. and Japan gave presentations on city planning and water management for securing water security. In the session III, experts in water management and city planning discussed ways for water management linked to water security and waterfront city planning around the major four rivers.
