Minnesota, USA -July 25, 2011 - Hopefully none of our readers are among the group of people who Google+ deleted due to non-compliance with the 'name rule'; the rule states "Google Profiles requires you to use the name that you commonly go by in daily life." Unfortunately, those who have unusual nicknames in everyday life may still have issues with being deleted. What is so difficult about putting a real name The main concern is privacy because every Google+ profile is public so there is no way to keep others from finding us.

Although I did not join the 'experimental run' of Google+, I already have the impression that Google is not starting off right. First of all, it angered some users by requiring a gender to be displayed; even though it nicked that rule, undoubtedly it left a few people feeling sore towards its network. Now, users' accounts are deleted if they do not show their 'proper' name. For a company who prides itself on creativity, it definitely limits its users.

Facebook is looking even better at this point since it offers flexibility in the 'naming' of accounts. I understand that Google+ would like to ward off the users with lousy intentions; however a variation of a name or nickname does not necessary point to any wrongdoing. For some people, it is a custom to display their names in a certain way whether it is a variation of the real name or a fun nickname given to them; why would Google want to hinder ones' creativity or custom If I would like to be called "Yoshi", should I not be able to display my name as such

Perhaps you cannot see the real issue here; if Google+ forces users to show their names to the general public, how can anyone stop others from following them With Facebook, we can choose how others can discover us online. Yet, Google+ exposes us to the world with no ways of limiting who can find us and how. Think about this: many users when signing up for Facebook did not display their full names -I did not until I understood how I could control my privacy. When something is as new and uncertain as this, users would like to have some control; Google is taking this away from them.

For over a century, pseudonyms were used to protect people's identities, but also create a 'persona' that others could understand at the same time. Even now, most of us have online e-mail IDs, message board names, and other customized names that do not consist of our real names -perhaps partly but even this would not be acceptable to Google+.

If the issues thus far are any indication, Google+ will have more issues prior to opening up to the public. For some of these issues Google will listen, but for other issues it will likely be strict. Do you want to be in 'control' or let Google dictate 'who' you are
