Minnesota, USA -July 26, 2011 - Perhaps you have hundreds or even thousands of friends on Facebook, yet you are having issues connecting with others on the 'personal' level. Most people are struggling with this; friending acquaintances in Facebook after meeting them, which typically remain as 'acquaintances'. When you look at your online life, it feels like you are the King or Queen of the world; however, your real social life brings you down because you are not as close to these friends so you do not feel comfortable 'going out' or asking anyone to join you in a special activity.

In most parts of the world, the typical 'street scene' is the same; people walk around with their heads hanging down as they type a text message or browse the web. How many people are actually conscious of what is around them If we do not pay attention to those around us, we cannot expect to gain good friends. Let's face it, we are our own enemies when it comes to socializing. In order to get 'real friends', we must ditch the digital devices and fully interact with others.

Imagine this, we spend most of our time interacting with others via online messaging or text/picture messages; we barely use voice or face-to-face conversations anymore. As Skype's video calling popularity grows, maybe the new 'traditional' form of communicating will come back in full swing. Yet, text messaging and virtual messages will always be used as much as they have been. We need to break out of these habits in order to bloom in our social lives -at least temporarily until there's a group of friends who are bonded with us.

Like most people, my phone is almost connected to my hip; I feel lost if I lose it anywhere. Yet, there is a difference between 'security' and 'obsession'. If you literally cannot stop glancing at your phone every few minutes, there may be a slight problem; this is the reason that your social life is lacking. Who wants to spend time with someone who cannot ignore the phone for even a while

If you want to get out of this social rut, there are a few options you can take. Ultimately, it is up to you to gain 'real' friendships rather than turn them into another digital relationship.

To meet new 'real' friends:

1.)    Plan an event and ask each friend to invite someone whom you do not know.

(This is an easy way to find others who may have the same interests as you. Although you may not get the time to know everyone well, it gives you the opportunity to click with the few who may become your closest friends.)

2.)    Join an organization or volunteer at an event.

(It is a fact: people bond with others if someone is helping another or they have a strong passion for the same issues. Do not be afraid to join a group and play an active role because it could not only impact your personal life but also your professional life as well.)

3.)    Approach others at events or anywhere around town.

(Get your nose out of your phone and look around you as you go throughout your day; do you notice there are faces you see often Talk with these people. Hopefully they will also put their cellphones down and communicate with you as well. Who knows, you may have a lot in common aside from the travel to work and back home.)

REMEMBER:

Be approachable -smile, stay alert, and do not be afraid to learn something new in order to connect with others.
