2011 Korea Auto Science Camp
The 2011 Korea Auto Science Camp sponsored by GM Korea Company began today at the Sangnok Resort in South Chungcheong province. The four-day activity concludes on July 29.

The Korea Auto Science Camp was created in 2005 to enhance children's interest in automotive science and nurture future talent for the Korean automotive industry. Now in its seventh year, the annual program is hosted by Korea's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST).

GM Korea President and CEO Mike Arcamone, MEST Director General Jinseok Lee participated in today's opening ceremony at GM Korea's Bupyeong headquarters in Incheon. They offered a brief introduction to the camp and gave words of encouragement to participants and their parents.

Following the ceremony, the students were taken on a tour of GM Korea's production facilities to see firsthand how vehicles are built. They also visited one of GM's key global design organizations, the GM Korea Design Center, to witness the vehicle design process.

Arcamone said, "GM Korea is proud of our sponsorship of the Korea Auto Science Camp. Our goal is to help children understand the principles of automotive science in an easy and interesting way. We hope the valuable learning experience will serve as a foundation for their continued growth as creative and talented individuals."

Lee said, "Automobiles are easily accessible to children, who tend to be curious about science and love cars. This camp is very meaningful since it provides a chance for children to learn a wide range of principles involved in the working of the automobile and inspires them to dream about becoming leaders in Korea's automotive industry one day."

A total of 120 sixth-grade students selected by regional education boards nationwide are participating in the 2011 Korea Auto Science Camp. They will receive presentations on the scientific principles involved in operating vehicles, including their propulsion systems, transmissions, steering systems, brakes, suspensions and electrical devices. They will also engage in various scientific experiments, build and race their own model cars, and observe the operation of safety equipment such as air bags.

Students at this year's camp will enjoy a special treat: a ride in GM's cutting-edge Chevrolet Volt, which is powered by electricity. This will help the children better understand eco-friendly vehicles that run on alternative sources of power.

Awards and gifts will be presented to individual students and groups that excel, including the Minister of Education, Science and Technology Award, the GM Korea CEO Award and the Encouragement Award.
