The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced that it received applications from 59 consortia from July 15 to July 22, of which about 10 will be selected for the pilot project.
The consortia proposed various long and short term student exchange projects composed of joint/double degree programs, internships, joint classes of students from the three countries, student exchanges, and summer/winter break programs.
By discipline, humanities and social studies accounted for the biggest share (30.5%) followed by economics/business management/trade (15.3%) and natural science and engineering (13.5%). There were applications from medicine, education, art, sport, and other areas.
A total of 40 Korean universities applied for the pilot program, of which 16 are from Seoul-Gyeonggi area, 7 from Daegu-Gyeongbuk area, 6 from Busan-Gyeongnam area, 4 from Daejeon-Chungnam area, 2 from Gwangju and Incheon each, and 1 from Gangwon, Jeju, and Jeonbuk, respectively.
Since the CAMPUS Asia was adopted as a new cooperation project at the 3rd Trilateral Summit Meeting held in Jeju in May last year, Korea, Japan, and China decided to proceed with the pilot project from this year.
The three countries agreed to support 100 students a year from 2012 to 2015 through an agreement, and participating students, according to their projects, will benefit from cross-border credit recognition in the three countries and have the opportunities for joint/double degree and internship programs.
Korea, China, and Japan will complete the first review from August to September, and select about 10 consortia in October through a joint evaluation before launching student exchange in 2012.
The pilot project of CAMPUS Asia - an Asian Erasmus Mundus - will enhance the competitiveness of universities in the region while developing studies on Asian values. It is also expected to serve as a basis for the mobility of talents in Asia, strengthening the trilateral cross-border human network and contributing to building an Asia community.
