For the patient

Flying for too long in a narrow economy seat can cause sudden changes in complexion, pain in the calf of the leg, swelling, fever, flares, and sometimes you can even feel your veins getting harder than usual. Lifting your feet toward the knee can also bring some pain and some people experience difficulty with breathing. These symptoms are part of what is often called economy class syndrome.

Deep vein thrombosis - fatal to people who stay still

Economy class syndrome is medically termed deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It is caused by the coagulation of blood when a person does not move for a long time.

The blood clot traveling around in the veins leads to the pain in the leg or swelling. Furthermore, if it travels to the lungs, the clot results in a pulmonary embolism, which can also lead to death unless proper treatment follows. People who are undergoing surgery are exposed to the biggest risk. In addition, these people mostly have low fitness levels, having stayed in bed for treatment for a long time. However, they cannot avoid having surgery just to prevent DVT - how, then, could we overcome the dilemma A DVT prevention device is a piece of medical equipment used to block DVT or its progression to pulmonary embolism. The technologies required to develop this device are highly intricate, and therefore, are mainly obtained in advanced countries.

However, Daesung Maref has succeeded in producing Korea's first DVT prevention system: DVT-2600. The company is exporting a variety of medical equipment including DVT-2600, a digital pneumatic compressor, and a pneumatic warming blanket system, all of which are designed to protect the safety of patients under operation. The digital pneumatic compressor in particular adopted LCD graphics and a touchpad system and therefore differentiates itself from other conventional products from the U.S. or Europe with analog or FND displays.

Overcoming the bias against domestic products to advance to global markets

DVT-2600

Even after successfully developing difficult technologies, Daesung Maref is faced with many obstacles because of the prevalent prejudice among Korean hospitals that domestic medical equipment are not of high quality. However, DVT-2600 has competed with and won against global medical equipment manufacturers in huge bids in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and South America.

The international markets have already recognized the excellence of DVT-2600. Daesung Maref, for more aggressive overseas marketing, runs promotion activities in more than 15 international medical, beauty, or health exhibitions every year and also exports their products to 60 countries.

Apart from owning the most diverse product ranges, the company has set a competitive price - a bit higher than Chinese or Taiwanese but lower than other advanced countries' products - which explains their anticipation for continuous growth in the future.

Daesung Maref  has been awarded the KOTRA Seal of Excellece since 2009
