Minnesota, USA -August 24, 2011 - Ever wanted to use the "Places" feature of Facebook, but do not have a smartphone that can support the app It can be frustrating that your friends can show their locations and what events they are attending, yet you cannot partake in this. Fortunately, Facebook is about to accommodate your needs by expanding its reach; it can be used on any device or even the regular computer web, so if you have a location to share, you can! Facebook mentioned, "Lots of people use Facebook to talk about where they are, have been or want to go."
What does this mean for the user experience The privacy settings in Facebook will change again since there will be more information which will need to be filtered based on user preference. Instead of just letting anyone check others into Places or have these notifications automatically show up on another friend's wall, it will need to be 'approved'. Facebook is taking the safe route by being extra cautious in order to keep its users happy. You can always change your settings to automatically allow a 'check-in post' hit your wall. The "Places" icon will appear directly on the Facebook profile page; you can choose whether you set your location as a comment, photo, or status update and also which of your friends are a part of that update. If you are on-the-go and use your web browser on your phone, it should work as easily as navigating Facebook was in the past. Just like all posts on Facebook, you can also manage who can view particular check-ins. If you do not want your family or particular friends to see a 'special party' -or anything else of that nature -then you can keep them from seeing that.
If you are already a "Places" user, you will notice that you could only set your Location update as a status. Luckily, Facebook is not only accommodating all Facebook users, but adding more options so that the App users can also benefit.
Why use the "Places" feature When it first launched a year ago, it helped users locate special deals, see which friends are nearby, and also get ideas of places to visit in the future based on your past locations. Even though it could be a scary thought that hundreds of people will know your location at one point in time, it is also fun! It gives everyone the opportunity to socialize. After all, it is the reason we are on a social network, is it not
The changes to Places have not been made yet, but keep your eyes posted as it should be soon!
