Minnesota, USA -August 26, 2011 - According to the findings of Pew Research Center, 65% of adults proclaim that they use a social network; this is a 5% jump from last year's results and over two times as high as the average in 2008 of 29%. It tells us what we already know: social networks are popular and gaining popularity among the 'older' crowd. "The graying of social networking sites continues, but the oldest users are still far less likely to be making regular use of these tools," stated Mary Madden, Senior Research Specialist and co-author of the report of Pew. Pew suggests that the 'power user' is still the women between the ages of 18-29 though.

No matter the age, everyone is getting
Surprisingly, additional findings of the research concluded that over half of people view social networks in a positive way; it is contrary to a lot of ideas floating around in the recent months about people 'leaving' social networks due to negative feelings towards them. Perhaps it is a trend that is not as 'common' or prevalent as we thought. After all, if it was, this would have been discovered among the 2,277 respondents of the survey.

The older adults -ages 50-64 - are hopping on board to social networking, which may 'bother' the younger crowd -since it was originally set up for college-aged kids. Yet, these adults typically are not as active as others. However, I have friended plenty of people in this age range who are family friends and they are as active as everyone else. Perhaps they are out of the ordinary, but there is a chance that the adults underreported their social networking usage -due to embarrassment, undoubtedly.

Concerns may arise with the increased usage of social networking sites with the older adults; not only was there an increase in social networking, but recent reports from other sources reveal that the cybercrime related to these services is also rising. If these increases are somehow linked, will social networks such as Facebook release information to these users to help protect themselves from typical 'scams' It is not to say in an insulting way but these users did not grow up using the internet so they may be more prone to clicking on what 'grabs' their attention - we all know that scammers and cybercriminals are good with doing this.

Social networking will not go away anytime soon and will likely pick up speed in the future. The popularity may shift in the coming years to social networks with a specific interest or focus. Undoubtedly, Facebook will remain as one of the top social networks; it still has a tight grip over the social networking users.
