Does filters ever really work

One day, you find your fish swimming in a dirty aquarium and finally decide to use a filter to purify the water. You feel guilty for the fish because you have not been using the filter as often as you should have for fear that you might have to pay a large electricity bill next month. On top of that, the water does not seem to get much cleaner with the filter. Time passes and, one after another, your fish start dying. "What a waste," you say, frustrated by the hopeless filter. Is there any filter that will save the fish, work well, and, at the same time, does not cost too much electricity Filters have become cheaper and better.

The Gravity Flow Fiber (GFF) Filter of Sseng, run by CEO Gang Youngbae, works based on gravity.  It fastens the non-woven fiber bundle with fixed bottom and compresses it until there is a 2-3 cm layer on the perforated plate, before allowing the gravity to filter the water with about 30cm of difference in water level. After it reaches the assigned level, the filter relaxes its filter medium and sprays backwashing air to create an intense upward stream of water so that the shearing force generated by the fiber movement produces backwash water - hence the name GFF. Therefore, by installing two filters or more, the upward stream automatically provides backwash water, making backwash pumps unnecessary.

What makes this product unique is the energy-saving fiber filter that uses gravity with 30 cm of difference in water level. It significantly reduces the operation cost, and the performance has also been substantially improved (SS 0.7㎎/l on average when filtering sewage effluent) to a level comparable with international products.

In addition, it takes up little space (with its rectangular rather than cylindrical body) and does not require pickling to remove salt or biofilm thanks to the nonwoven movable layer as well as allowing the maintenance work such as replacing filter module without having to stop the water supply or operation.

Sseng breathes life into filters

Established in 1999, when the Korean market was dominated by sand filters, Sseng focused on developing fiber filter which has smaller size but better performance. The company has, so far, registered or applied for 55 patents related to filters in Korea and elsewhere and won the President Award and Jangyeongsil Award in 2009.

Furthermore, they have been selected as government support technology development programs 10 times including 'Next Generation Core Environmental Technology Developer' and also received technology certifications such as 'New Product Certification' from Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy (current Ministry of Knowledge Economy) and 'Good Procurement Product Certification' from Public Procurement Service.

The latest filter launched by Sseng does not require backwash pump, which consequently cuts down the operation costs. Over 430 GFF filters have been installed in Korea and 30 in other countries. Indeed, GFF is helping Sseng increase the market share in Korea as well as providing a stepping stone for the company to advance to global markets..

The company has recently built a new factory while spurring the production and distribution of their filters, hoping to develop the world's best filter in both quality and price.

Sseng Co., Ltd. has been awarded the KOTRA Seal of Excellence since 2009.
