A bird's nest has everything that young birds need to grow. It is the correct shape to hold the eggs. It is soft and comfortable to protect young birds from the harsh realities of life. And it is built up high, so that the baby birds can learn how to fly before they hit the ground, when they are pushed out. In the same way, Hanyang University's College of Engineering is created to nurture, protect, and train young engineers for the rigors of global engineering. Known as the CEO Elite School, it certainly has high expectations to fill. With a 72-year history and a host of proud alumni, Hanyang University delivers what they promise.
"Over 52,000 graduates have passed through the gates of Hanyang University College of Engineering (HUCE), and all have been part of the modernization of Korea that happened in the last few decades, from key personnel of national industries to designers of state-of-the-art technology," said Professor Kwon Oh-Kyong, Ph.D., Provost and Academic Vice President Hanyang University.
HUCE has maintained a 97.9% graduate employment rate since the 70s and over 87% of its students passed the 1st grade national technical exam, which is the highest percentage in the nation. In the 1980s, over 12.3% of board members of top the 100 companies in Korea were HUCE alumni. In the 1990s, especially after the 1997 IMF crisis, many venture firms were headed by HUCE graduates. They have led the new age of economic growth in IT areas such as electronics, communications, computers, and software, with many of them acting as leaders on Teheran Road, the core business district of Korea.
The new millennium saw the fruit of HUCE's past labors of practical education and industry-academic cooperation finally showing itself, with over 10 billion won coming from accumulated royalties from 2006-2009, the highest technology income/research funding rate in Korea with 7% profit in 2008, and the highest profits from patents amongst universities in 2008. These were all the results of HUCE's outstanding technical achievements and active industry-academic cooperation.
Instilling Love in Truth and Deeds
As the first private engineering college, "We educate our students under the principle Love in Truth and in Deeds. Of these, HUCE's practicality-centered education that stays faithful to the basic principles of engineering has made a huge difference. Engineering Mathematics, one of the basic lectures in engineering courses, is famous for its annual mathematics competition which allows students to really strive for excellence. Some corporations acknowledge the grades of this course alone, saying that they do not need to see any other grades of students who get over a B in this course," stated Choi Jae-Hoon Dean, Graduate School of Engineering and College of Engineering.
Volatile Next-gen Research
HUCE is currently undergoing research for the next-generation terabit class non-volatile memory semiconductors with Samsung Electronics, Hynix, and the Korean Institute of Science and Technology. Also HUCE is hosting the next-generation memory venture with the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy, developing breakthroughs such as post-NAND flash memory 30 Nano PRAM, RRAM, and flexible memory during the last 7 years with a 41 billion won research grant. In addition, over 24 billion won has been set aside for the development of STT-MRAM, which is expected to take the place of DRAM.
IT is not the only area HUCE is leading in research. As the government appointed a new materials development institute, HUCE is training the global leaders in key materials fields. The Undergraduate Research Innovation Program, a college research program dealing with communications, environment and biological components, is one of the most shining achievements of this venture. HUCE is hosting over 18 other ventures, and under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology's World Class University Development Plan, research is already under way to find a Korean green growth education program that will raise competition into world standard.
The energy problem is one of the key challenges faced by mankind, and problems such as global warming, climate change, and limited energy supplies must be met head on by governments. HUCE is undergoing research to develop the world's first flexible solar panel which will greatly enhance solar power use while contributing to future industry growth with new technology such as next-generation semiconductors.
These brilliant achievements in research will support the government's green growth plans. And with scientists such as Prof. Lee Young-Moo who developed polymer-coated electrodes that are over 500 times efficient than normal electrodes, the nation's first Nobel Prize for science seems within grasp.
Energy, Convergence, Cars, and Software
To train future professionals in the engineering field, HUCE currently has the following departments: Energy Engineering, Convergence Electronics Engineering, Future Automotive Engineering, and Software Engineering.
The Energy Engineering Department researches the attributes of different energy sources to ensure the procurement of reliable energy sources in the future. Also with the current interests in green energy growth there is more and more demand for clean and efficient energy, and the Department of Energy Engineering is sure to have a solution up their sleeves.
Convergence is a key concept in current IT trends, and the HUCE Convergence Electronics Department seeks to train personnel who can follow state-of-the-art technological advances in these areas. The direction of the course depends on the current trends in the IT industry, and undergraduates will be given chances to participate in graduate level studies for certain courses as well. The Future Automotive Engineering Department further delves into IT convergence and seeks to train personnel who can integrate this into the automobile industry.
The Software Department is a newly-founded department with aims to train software professionals who can contribute to domestic competitiveness in this area. Samsung Electronics will be a partner in this venture to train such individuals, and the courses will start in 2012 with 30 freshmen applicants.
The Future of Hanyang
The grand scheme of HUCE is to enter the list of top 50 engineering schools by 2020, and to be in the top 30 institutes in the world in specialized fields. The university is striving for smooth communications between the departments to build up research strength for the convergence age, and create a stronger collaboration system between businesses and foreign institutes for HUCE to become the open innovation center for future technologies. HUCE also aims to be a hub for business ventures for the latest Hanyang technologies.
According to Hanyang, the so-called science and engineering crisis that the nation faces must be met with interest in science and technology by the mass public, thus creating more opportunities for brilliant individuals to contribute in this area. Also, Hanyang plans to bring more foreign manpower to fill more specialized roles, including researchers and professors to train the next-generation of Hanyang engineers.
"The pride of engineering colleges is in their ability to train creative individuals and fill them with a pioneer spirit to create a good CEO. HUCE has a business foundation training center and an entrepreneur center. These two centers provide various consulting services and finance solutions. Successful businessmen are always happy to mentor our young trainees while funds to start businesses are provided by the Small and Medium Business Administration, KB, and US venture capital funds. Recently Chairman Uh Yoon-Dae created a 100 billion won (US$85.8 million) business support fund with the government. Our students have to create businesses like Microsoft, Apple, and Google, and we believe that it is our role to create the base for them to spread their wings," added Professor Kwon Oh-Kyong, Ph.D., Provost and Academic Vice President Hanyang University.
