Korean IT industry's Contribution to Economy: Highest in OECD The Ministry of Information & Communication held a New Year reception in concert with the Korea Association of Information & Telecommunication on Jan. 28 at the Lotte Hotel Seoul. MIC minister Chin Dae-je, said in his commemoration speech that "the economic contribution of the Korean IT industry appeared to be most high among OECD countries", adding that the domestic IT industry exports amounted to $74.7 billion last year. Dr. Myung Oh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technology, also applauded the progress of the Korean IT industry to the position of a pivotal sector of the economy. The MIC made the best use of this occasion to publicize its 'Ubiquitous Korea' strategy as well as the Ministry's IT839 program to promote the use of information technology. Halas Lace Exhibition in Seoul On the occasion of the inauguration of the Halas Lace Exhibition in Seoul, an event that marked the 16th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Hungary and the Republic of Korea, the Hungarian ambassador and Mrs. Katalin Torzsa presided over an opening ceremony and hosted a reception Feb. 1 at the Samsung Raemain Cultural Center. KITA New Year reception held with the U.S. representatives Top U.S. representatives in Korea graced the New Year reception of the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) held Jan. 11 at the Grand Intercontinental Seoul. In attendance were executives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea and diplomats from the U.S. embassy. U.S. Ambassador H.E. Christopher R. Hill said commercial relations between the two nations are growing faster than ever in his speech. KCCI annual new year greeting party The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) held its New Year reception Jan. 5 at the Convention & Exhibition Center. President Roh Moo-hyun was in attendance at the ceremony where he stressed the commitment of his administration to boosting per capital GDP to $20,000 by the end of his term. KCCI chairman Park Yong-sung, said constancy is important although economic circumstances this year are not forecast to be easy. Looking back over that last year, he said, the economy has experienced many difficulties such as skyrocketing oil prices and exchange rate declines. Scientific advances must lead the national economy The Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST) held a New Year gathering Jan. 6 that attracted representatives of 372 a technological-innovation model for their economy under which scientific advances lead the national economy. President Roh Moo-hyun said Korea can boost its long-term growth potential through enhancing R&D investment, furthering basic science, and nurturing creative personnel. KAIST's transformation into a private university The Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) held its annual New Year reception Jan. 8 at the Marriott Seoul with students, graduates and faculty in attendance in large numbers. Since its establishment 30 years ago KAIST has become the best research-oriented university in Korea. However, KAIST is now attempting to transform itself into a private university as a part of its financial expansion strategy.
