Yong-Kyung Lee , KT president and CEO
On Jan. 20, 2005, KT was selected the number one provider of WiBro (Wireless Broadband) services by the Ministry of Information & Communication (MIT). KT executives are interpreting KT's selection as the leading WiBro provider will position the company to pursue its agenda in the wire/wireless integration market. KT has so far provided a wireless LAN service, known as 'Nespot', but will be reoriented as an integrated real wire/wireless business provider with its recent top designation in the WiBro business providing the momentum. KT president and CEO Yong-Kyung Lee said in an interview with The Korea IT Times on his company being selected as the prime WiBro provider, 'Although we have faced stagnant growth due to a slack wireless market, KT has now gained the high ground necessary to achieve a commanding spot in the wireless data market that has been growing rapidly over 20% annually.' In the company's 'Future Strategy Vision 2010' released on the occasion of its privatization two years ago last August, KT stated it planned to nurture WiBro as a future core business. To this end, KT has been participating in international standardization efforts as well as its Hpi development project. In addition, "the BcN backbone network that KT operates already, as well as the infrastructure of its subsidiary, KTF, are forecast to contribute greatly to offering a reliable and quality service from the very beginning", Mr. Lee said. Accessible via a notebook or PDA Mr. Lee explained that KT WiBro will be provided in three different service formats: * Basic service for Internet access * Customized services allowing customers to choose from a range of services * Application services offering a wide range of special services and contents. He noted that KT also plans to provide package services by integrating existing high-speed Internet services with wireless LAN and mobile phone DMB for added convenience. KT will also offer various business solutions and customized application services for businesses and public organizations as well.

On the type of devices that through which the company's services will be accessible, CEO Lee said KT WiBro could be accessed with a notebook or PDA, adding WiBro makes it possible for users to access the Internet anywhere, anytime at a speed of 1Mbps by using a portable device. However, an executive of KT responsible for its WiBro business, pointed out that users will need a separate wireless data card to access the services. Many devices and data cards specifically designed for mobile Internet are being developed, he said, and some will be available on the market in 2006. Mr. Lee said in the near future, a wider range of devices will be developed for mobile telephony and DMB. Besides telematics, game consoles and even home appliances will also be equipped with new chips for mobile Internet connection. By taking part in technology standardization efforts to enlarge the WiBro market, KT has prepared the groundwork for the early commercialization of WiBro services. To speed the process of international standardization the company has entered into Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with overseas WiBro providers such as Nextel and Sprint. Moreover, KT has contributed to curtailing the time and labor necessary to designing a wireless network by developing the world's first wireless network tool for WiBro in April 2004. KT lays emphasis on market advancement through early commercialization domestically, and technology standardization through cooperation with manufacturers overseas. Mr. Lee said KT's strategy was to make inroads into the world market through standardization between Korea, China and Japan on the basis of IEEE 802.16e. Emphasis on service development
In connection with the WiBro service to be offered by KT, Mr. Lee committed himself to boosting service development and focusing on customer convenience by connecting with Megapass and Nespot. This means KT will offer an integrated service covering voice, data, images and so forth by developing multimode complex terminals, which will be combined with CDMA, wireless LAN, and DMB as a means of furthering the wire/wireless integration environment. The company plans to launch WiBro trial services from early 2006 and offer commercial services from April of the same year in consideration of the development schedules of related WiBro technologies and devices. CEO Lee stressed KT is aiming to make it possible for everyone to enjoy mobile Internet as soon as possible, adding the services will initially be available in the metropolitan area, and additional service areas will be announced as soon as decisions are made. KT plans to lower the mobile Internet fees and offer customer-friendly prices so that anyone can use their services without worrying about the price. Mr. Lee expressed his hopes that as the number one provider of WiBro, a core project of the IT839 strategy, KT adheres to the government policy of leveraging the potential of WiBro to stimulate the stagnated domestic communications market and reinvigorating the national economy.
