LG Electronics has successfully developed a Code-Division Multiplexing (CDM) chip optimized for mobile handsets that are especially designed for reception of satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) signals. The company said its satellite CDM chip represents dramatic improvements in size, power consumption, and manufacturing costs, some of the most important elements to be considered when designing semiconductors for mobile handset applications. In fact, LG Electronics claims the chip poses the industry's top reception with the lowest power consumption. "While satellite CDM chips developed for handset applications to date have been either too big or too costly, we are now able to get the edge on the competition price-wise since we can integrate SDRAM (Synchronous Random Access Memory) into a single package," said a company spokesman. Accordingly, the company said it has demonstrated its top-ranking capability in Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technology in the field of radio wave reception through its development of SoC (System on Chip) technology for terrestrial DMB applications in September last year. In addition, the company has now assembled a full line-up of satellite DMB products including in-car terminals, portable handsets for exclusive use in satellite DMB and DMB cell phones. The CDM chip is the industry's first to feature satellite DMB receiver capability and SDRAM together with Multi-Chip Module (MCM) into a single package. Moreover, it has four built-in Analog-Digital Converters (ADCs) so as to facilitate the simultaneous inflow of signals from two antennas, and is directly linked with MSM chips for CDMA communication. Another outstanding feature of the chip is that the company has autonomously developed applied algorithms to enhance reception quality and minimize signal disconnections in remote areas. Lee Choon, chief researcher at the LG Electronics DTV Research Lab said, "By applying ultra-electricity saving algorithms that we developed jointly with our SIC department, we can elongate periods of TV viewing without interruptions to over three hours from one-and-a-half hours by consuming only one-third of the electricity consumed by satellite DMB chips currently on the market." The company said the development of the satellite DMB chips involved the efforts of over fifty researchers during the past year and represented an investment of 5 billion won. In the meantime, LG Electronics believes that its satellite DMB chips can make a considerable contribution to promoting domestic satellite DMB services once they are applied to various DMB devices including cell phones and in-car terminals. On Nov. 15, 2004, LG Electronics unveiled the world's first mobile phone for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcast reception, and demonstrated its functions. LG's DMB mobile phone adopts the System-on-Chip (SoC) technology for DMB reception that the company developed the previous month. The chip enables the user to watch terrestrial broadcasts and talk on the phone at the same time.
