4G = 5 times the speed of 3G

SEOUL, KOREA --- There was a time when phones were just for calling people. Then they were for texting people and calling them. Now, they are for watching movies, listening to music, surfing the Internet, and occasionally calling people. If you’re one of those customers who is more interested in getting movies and Internet on your phone, you may have become frustrated with the slow data speeds you currently experience on your phone compared to your home computer. But now, with the Samsung’s three new LTE smartphones and their Galaxy Nexus, you don’t have to feel that frustration anymore, as long as you are with SKT or LGU. Since the 4G network is expected to be completed all across Korea by early next year, LTE phones will provide its users with 5 times better data transfer speed. With brand new LTE lines, Samsung expects to ace the market in the first quarter of next year.

LTE Leading Stats Worldwide

A recent article in Forbes states that LG is the leading LTE service provider, but an actual fact check reveals that the top three traditional 3G corporations: Ericsson, Nokia, and Qualcomm are ahead. Ericsson, especially secured 20 percent of the LTE related patents, and the number of Samsung’s patents registered with European Telecommunication Standard Institute is higher (399) than LG (389). “Currently Ericsson, Nokia, and Qualcomm are credited as the front runners in LTE. But for the record, we distributed LTE phones and systems through MetroPCS last September for the first time in America. We take high pride in this. Although we are ranked about fourth or fifth in LTE, the chair of the last week’s 3GPPSA2 was Samsung. This clearly shows that regardless of our areas to be improved, Samsung has gained global conscious as a fast emerging LTE leader,” said the spokesperson of Samsung. Since 1998, Samsung, as the leader of 3G related evolution, ranked the first in the intellectual property of LTE-A version.

Purpose Driven Purchase

A famous Korean Gag Duo announces the release of the Samsung Galaxy SII LTE during the show.

The Galaxy brand is the biggest android smartphone platform, and Samsung recently unveiled four LTE smartphones with different screen sizes and features. Because the content displayed on a smartphone is very limited due to its size, the screen size is bigger with higher resolution. Samsung offers three major different styles for different user demands.

LTE or HD LTE, that is a problem

The major difference between LTE and HD LTE - which is self-explanatory, is the quality of display. Both offer a high quality image with unbuffered video operations, but the resolution of the LTE is slightly less than the HD LTE. The LTE is mostly recommended for early adopters who seek advanced experience at a reasonable price.

Note or Nexus, that is a problem

The Galaxy Note targets “IT icons” who seek to have both tablet and smartphone in a single device. The S Pen allows the user to draw detailed illustrations and aids one to take fast notes. With Note, the user can simply write and save the text in Word. Its 5.3 inch screen- the largest smartphone screen ever on the market - enables its user to have the best advantages of tablets and smartphones all-in-one. Nexus has the latest Android 4.0. Google emphasizes the sensational experience its user is about to have. “In the Hong Kong exhibition last week, the Nexus’ Android Beam and Face Unlock features were literally praised by the visitors. The speed was noted to be amazing, with User UI multitasking, enlarged screen, and strengthened grip also appealing to many.

What a Champ has to Score the Third Quarter

Galaxy S2 HD LTE

The Galaxy S2 is currently the best-selling LTE smartphone in Korea although it is only available through SKT. The product features a 1.5 GHz dual core CPU, 4.5-inch super AMOLED Plus display, 8-megapixel camera on the back, 2-megapixel camera on the front, 1 GB RAM, Full HD 1080p record and play capability on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform. Its size is measured at 130.6×69.6×9.5 (mm) weighing 135.5 grams.

The Galaxy S2 HD LTE, the Galaxy S2 LTE’s sibling, is waiting to launch sometime in November, although the exact launch date has not yet been announced. Just like the Galaxy S2 LTE, every specification is the same except its size and weight. The smartphone has a 4.65-inch HD super AMOLED display with 1280×720 resolution compared to 800×480 in Galaxy S2 LTE. The thickness is the same at 9.5 mm weighing 140 grams. Galaxy S2 LTE will be provided by only SKT and Galaxy S2 HD (LTE) will be supported by three providers.

Samsung’s last LTE smartphone announced was the Galaxy Note. Although the product is categorized as a smartphone, it falls somewhere in between a smartphone and a tablet. The display is a 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED in 1280×800 resolutions running on 1.4 GHz dual core processor. The GALAXY Note combines full touch and advanced pen input experience. The S Pen features pressure sensitivity to make writing and drawing precise, fast, and rich as using an actual pen. The GALAXY Note also offers easy tasking on the 5.3 inch full screen with its minimum screen transition and scrolling.

Tablet + Smartphone = Galaxy Note

Samsung’s LTE smartphone trios are the fastest smartphones available. Yet, the best feature is not their processor speed. They are LTE compatible. Compared to 3G services, the download speed of LTE phones is 5 times faster and the upload speed is 3.5 times faster according to Samsung and the carrier’s claim. The current 3G service is not fast enough for HD video content and downloading large size files. Soon more HD video content will be available for streaming and the cloud computing with more data will require faster wireless connection speed.

If you’re in Hong Kong, you can get the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smart phone. It has a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display in 1280×720 resolution running on a 1.2 Ghz dual core processor. It has a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel camera in the front for video calls. “Samsung and Google have closely collaborated to push the mobile experience forward. We are pleased to deliver the best Android smartphone experience for customers with Galaxy Nexus. We will continue to move forward with Android to provide the most compelling consumer experience in the mobile world,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business. But what stands out about the Galaxy Nexus is that it is running Ice Cream Sandwich, the absolute latest version of Android OS.

Sweet, Sweet Ice Cream Sandwich: Galaxy Nexus

Galaxy Nexus

“Ice Cream Sandwich demonstrates the Android platform’s continued innovation with one release that works on phones and tablets and everything in between. Features like Android Beam and Face Unlock show the innovative work our team is doing, and Galaxy Nexus showcases the power behind Ice Cream Sandwich,” said Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile for Google.p>

Ice Cream Sandwich brings an entirely new look and feel to Android. It has a redesigned user interface with improved multitasking, notifications, Wi-Fi hotspot, NFC support and a full web browsing experience. Galaxy Nexus features software navigation buttons, a first for Android smartphones. The lock screen, home screen, phone app, and everything in between has been rethought and redesigned to make Android simple, beautiful, and useful.

Ice Cream Sandwich also features a new People app, which lets you, browse friends, family, and coworkers, see their photos in high-resolution, and check their latest status updates from Google+ and other social networks. Galaxy Nexus features a redesigned camera which introduces panorama mode, 1080p video capture, zero-shutter lag, and effects like silly faces and background replacement.

Galaxy Nexus is also connected to the cloud, keeping your email, contacts, and all other data synced across your devices. You have access to more than 300,000 apps and games from Android Market, or, in certain countries, you can buy and read books, or rent movies and stream them instantly from your phone. In the U.S., you can also upload your music to the cloud with Music Beta by Google and listen anywhere, even when offline.

Ice Cream Sandwich introduces innovations such as Face Unlock which uses facial recognition to unlock your phone. Using NFC technology, Android Beam allows you to quickly share web pages, apps, and YouTube videos with your friends by simply tapping your phones together. You can even use fun effects while shooting video or video chatting with Google Talk.

Communication has changed

When the wireless network was changed from 2G to 3G, people felt a totally different experience with the new network and its devices. The way people communicate has changed. While 2G was mostly for texting and calling, 3G and Wi-Fi access offered more options like free texting and calling, video chatting, SNS, and more ways to communicate. If the 3G network changed the way we communicate, the 4G network will change how people consume content whether it is video, audio, e-books, or others. Many video sharing websites, like You-Tube or Vimeo, now have HD content, but the 3G network is not fast enough to watch those HD videos smoothly. With the new 4G network, people will be able to enjoy more high quality content on the road.

With the development and adoption of a new network, more subscription-based models will be available and faster network service will help to bring more content to customers. Currently, in the US, video subscription services like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon, are available. That video content is not just available on a PC or Internet connected TVs but mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. With HD playback-capable mobile devices, a faster data network is necessary and the LTE network will serve that.

Vanguard of Mobile HD Era

Samsung Electronics announced the dawning of a Mobile HD era with the relevance of their world’s first LTE smartphones with HD super AMOLED. This HD super AMOLED uses a 1280×720 HD (High Definition) resolution, and for the first time for AMOLED display, realized a groundbreaking 316 ppi (pixel per inch), increasing screen resolution and readability drastically. A variety of high resolution content that is provided by the LTE communications network such as high resolution videophone function, realtime VOD service, and network games, can be enjoyed in HD super AMOLED. With a 4.65 wide screen, 16:9 screen ratio, 110 percent color reproduction rate, and 180 degree viewing angle showing a clear vision in any angle, they succeeded in making a ‘HD theater in your hands’ by providing the optimized video viewing environment.

The Galaxy SII HD LTE’ supports multimode such as HSPA+ (SKT, KT)/Rev.A (LGU+), and WCDMA/GSM (roaming) making it capable of using the fastest wireless Internet in anywhere in Korea. The design has also been strengthened. Using Bezel technology, the frame of the 4.65 type AMOLED display is made as thin as possible, emphasizing its slim and refined image, and increased grip with its 9.55mm slim thickness. Other functions include a 1850mAh high-capacity battery, incorporation of local area communications technology NFC (Near Field Communication), supports Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0+HS, and Flash compatibility. The Galaxy SII HD LTE will be released through SK telecom, KT, and LG U+.

President Shin Jong-gyun of Samsung Electronics wireless business division said “Samsung Electronics will provide a perfect smart life to its consumers with LTE smartphones made with Korea’s best technology.” He added that “We will continue to lead the LTE market by continuously introducing more innovative devices into the domestic market.”
