Cyber universities are expected to play a core role in not only education competitiveness, but also national competitiveness in the era of 21st century informatization. Cyber universities came into the world as places where one might acquire a modest reeducation without any restrictions of time and space. Under this premise, nine cyber universities received permission to establish in late 2001. Above all, cyber universities have the merit whereby students can acquire a regular bachelor degree solely through attending a lectures and tutorials on-line. The fees charged by cyber universities are one-third those of traditional off-line universities. Thus, cyber universities are appropriate for employees who missed the opportunity to have a university education or those who feel the need for retraining. As cyber universities are increasing their enrolment of students who are admitted regardless of their scholastic ability, age or occupation, they are becoming the cradle of lifetime education in Korea. Lee Young-sae, president of the Cyber University Council (president of Daegu Cyber University), stresses he is confident that cyber universities are a new education paradigm to correspond to the desire of the times. In order for cyber universities to develop one notch higher, he points out cooperation between cyber universities in areas such as content mutual exchange is urgently needed.
