12th Software Industry Workers Day Celebrated with Prizes for Distinguished People and Products

SEOUL, KOREA --- The ministry awarded the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit to Kwon Yeong-beom, president of Youngrimwon Soft Lab and presidential medals to six people including Yang Wang-seong, executive vice president of Hancom. The Prime Minister's Medals went to eight people including Lee Young-sang, president of Data Streams Co. and Sohn Sam-su, president of Ware Valley. Thirty people including Kim Sang-ho, manager at Hyundai Information Technology, Yu Seok-mun, manager at NHN, and Choi Soon-woo, laboratory chief at On the IT took home Medals from the Minister of Knowledge Economy.

Kwon Yeong-beom, president of Youngrimwon Soft Lab received the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit in recognition of developing a Korean-type enterprise resource-planning (ERP) package. Other Industrial Service Medals went to Seok Chang-gyu, president of Web Cash for his contribution to popularizing financial software, and Lee Ho-su of Samsung Electronics in recognition of his contribution to mobile OS development.   

 This year, the government gave prizes to software engineers who are working not only in the software industry but also in other industries such as the manufacturing and financial industries as software has emerged to be at the core of the competitiveness of the industry. Rsupport, which developed “Remote View”, won the Presidential Prize in the New Software Category at the Korean Software Awards while Tilon and Nemustech received the Prime Minister’s Prizes. 

In the Global Software Contest, the Presidential Prize went to Jeong Seung-won, a manager at SK C&C who submitted Nexcore Mobile Platform. Choi Jeong-ah, a senior researcher at Samsung SDS and Oh Ji-hyeon, a student at Seolin Internet High School both received the Prime Minster's Prize. In addition, Daewoo Information Systems and KEPCO Electric Power Research Center won the Prizes from the Minister of Knowledge Economy for an energy efficiency management solution and an AM1-based electric power information processing system, respectively.    

 “Currently the Korean software industry does not have a strong footing for nurturing world-class companies,” said Yun Sang-jin, the Vice Minister of Knowledge Economy in his congratulatory message. “The government is making endeavors to create a software ecosystem with a circle to support companies such as devising strategies to build a win-win growth software ecosystem in order to make Korea a international software powerhouse.”    

 “We can not obtain big results only with the government’s policies. I hope software companies will take the lead in developing the software industry by significantly revamping themselves such as through the expansion of R&D investments,” Yun added.
