KDC (Korea Digital Communications Corp.), which assumed leadership of the NDMB Plus consortium along with Korea Petrochemical Ind., Co. Ltd, is now aiming to become a regional provider of Digital Media Broadcasting (DMB). NDMB Plus was a contender for one of 6 terrestrial DMB licenses to serve the Seoul Metropolitan Area, but failed in its bid. However, since DMB can only be received in the metropolitan area, the Korean Broadcasting Commission has decided to open bidding for single licenses to provide DMB in each of Korea's major regions. An KDC executive responsible for DMB project, said, "Although we were left out of the selection to provide ground wave DMB service in the metropolitan area, KDC will form a new consortium that will bid to provide the service in Chungchung province (both north and south)." Considering that the participant companies of existing consortia have their bases in Seoul, any new consortium of which KDC will be a part should work to attract a Chungchung area company to be a member, the executive said. He also stressed that KDC will concentrate its efforts on becoming the strongest candidate by the end of this year when the Korean Broadcasting Commission will select regional business providers, adding that the company gained a wealth of experience in DMB in the course of the selection process. As part of this effort, the executive stated that KDC would pursue the mass production of terrestrial wave DMB receivers as well as development projects for multimedia core parts, the executive stated.
