As the cellular phone market becomes saturated, it is becoming more and more difficult for mobile communication providers to attract new subscribers. KTF is moving into the telematics service business since it is a market through which it can increase revenue per subscriber. In a bid to become a leader in the "before market," that is, on new automobiles, KTF launched its Everway telematics service in concert with Ssangyong Motor Company in February 2005. Everway is a total multimedia service based on the EV-DO high-speed wireless communication network, which transmits wireless data at a maximum rate of 2.4Mbps. Everway offers daily living information such as stock, news and weather reports as well as information on 135 golf courses nationwide. Ssangyong currently offers the service on its top-of-the-line New Rexton models, but plans to subsequently extend installation to other models. The subscription fees involve an upfront 30,000 won plus a basic user fee of 26,000 won a month. KTF entered into a business association with Renault Samsung Motor Company to develop, commercialize and introduce the INS-700 cutting-edge telematics system that was launched in March 2005. KTF offers a variety of services through its advanced telematics terminal that will be loaded into the SM series, such as wireless Internet content, stock reports, games, plus information on traffic and daily living. In regard to after-marketing (that is, the marketing of telematics services to vehicle owners rather than their installation on new models), KTF is offering 'K-ways' service (including the WIDE Type service), and Phone Type service. K-ways is the brand of an advanced telematics service, which is being promoted through the KTF network in advertisements whereby the 'K' is shown to stands for the Republic of Korea and 'Way' means a road, some other such route, a method, or a way of doing something. To use the K-way KIT Type service, it is necessary to have a K-ways exclusive cellular phone as well as a navigation kit. K-ways is also available in a convenient, customer-friendly format especially designed for female customers. The various functions are as follows: * Course Guidance Calculates and details the fastest route to a given destination means of a cellular phone window. * Traffic Information Highlights congested areas * Surrounding Search Provides detailed information on surrounding facilities such gas stations and restaurants * Emergency Doumi Alerts emergency services when an accident occurs by pressing a button The KIT Type service is available in two forms, one costing a monthly subscription rate of 9,000 won and the other, 5,000 won. With KTF's WIDE Type service, subscribers can use the latest telematics service by connecting with a cellular phone that is provided when they purchase a 3.1-inch wide screen LCD navigation system. As it offers optimal course guidance by dint of real-time traffic information and various added-services such as MP3, games and download through the Internet plus existing navigational services like a safety alert in the event of an accident or other road hazard, the WIDE Type service turns a car into a moving office since the driver can access all sorts of in-vehicle multimedia services. Moreover, KTF's Phone Type service will guide a motorist or a pedestrian to a certain destination by using a GPS-based cellular phone without the need for additional equipment, the first time such a service has been offered in Korea. In the future, customers will be able to access road guidance services much more easily through using only a cellular phone, KTF explained. KTF will introduce its K-ways and Everway services at this year's Telematics Road Show 2005 held under the auspices of the Korea Telematics Business Association on April 13-14 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, More information is available at www.ktf.co.kr or through (82-2) 2010-0043.
