Q: What would you say is the status of the Korean telematics industry A: As one of the IT 839 strategies, the telematics industry's developmental and market potentials are becoming an object of a national attention. Right now, the Korean telematics market is at a stage where its infrastructure is being completed and is ready to move forward. As everybody knows, the telematics industry is a 'convergence industry', which is composed of various industries such as the auto and telecommunications industries. Currently, as several types of product such as telematics-based cellular phones, PDA navigators, and in-car terminals are being launched, the domestic telematics industry has constructed a base on which to grow. Q: How are the telematics projects of individual companies faring A: Telematics offers emergency response, locational, traffic information and entertainment services via wireless telecommunication technology, together with Global Positioning (GP) and auto control technology. Since Korea has constructed a telecommunication infrastructure without equal in the world and its auto industry also is on a par with those of the advanced countries, the telematics industry is considered to have huge possibilities. First off, SK Telecom has garnered 220,000 mobile phone subscribers, the second-largest number in the world and has launched telematics products in concert with Renault Samsung Motors. KTF plans to build its success in the telematics industry by devising various business models. KTF's chief business partners include auto manufacturers such as Ssangyong Motor Company, telematics terminal business providers, and major Systems Integration (SI) business providers. At the ITU Busan exhibition held September last year, KTF held a joint demonstration with Ssangyong Motor Company to promote its telematics brand, 'Everway'. In addition, the company has been offering its 'K-way' after-market service since June, last year. LG Telecom is providing its 'ez Drive' service for the after market, which includes automatic route guidance, road hazard information, and en route leisure and refreshment information such as the availability of your favorite kind of restaurant! Moreover, LG Telecom beat everyone to the punch with its 'Mozen' brand it introduced in November 2003 that offers road hazard warnings, route guidance, emergency alerts, and entertainment in collaboration with the Hyundai/Kia Motor Company. Q: What's the involvement of government in telematics A: Government initiatives designed to stimulate the industry include the telematics information center (TELIC) and the Jeju Island telematics model city project The TELIC will provide traffic and weather reports by 2007. The Jeju Island telematics model city project is expected to boost telematics exports. Meanwhile, our agency, the KOTBA, is working on standards to avoid overlapping investment. The ultimate goal of all projects is to offer all citizens greater convenience in their day-to-day lives. Q: Could you tell our readers something about the Telematics Road Show 2005/Asia Telematics Joint Business Workshop A: With the Korea Telematics Business Association (KOTBA), Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), and the International Cooperation Agency for Korean IT (ICA) as sponsors, the workshop will be an ideal place to introduce advanced domestic telematics solutions to Asian clients as a preparation to expanding into world markets. After that, our Association is planning to hold telematics road shows in Eastern Europe in the second half of 2005, in South America and West Europe in 2006, and in North America by 2007. Q: What is your outlook for telematics companies in the Asian and worldwide markets A: The domestic telematics industry is forming a base from which it can emerge as a global force in the short term thanks to Korea's leading IT industry. Because of the advanced nature of the Korean telecommunication environment, Korea has become the country to benchmark and use as a telematics test bed. It is evident that the telematics industry must rapidly build its competitiveness to benefit the country as a whole. More information is available at www.kotba.org
