At present, the chief domestic telematics projects under way are the Jeju Telematics Model City, and the Telematics Information Center. Plus these efforts, mobile communication business providers as well as auto makers are looking to telematics to pioneer new markets and provide added value to customers. In the case of residential, automobile and mobile communication applications, providers began offering navigation as well as traffic information services in 2001. Moreover, owing to the rise of various telematics service business providers in the before and after-markets, the range of services being offered is expanding. Tough competition lies ahead for providers, since KTF's K-Ways was launched May 2004 to join existing contenders Nate Drive from SK Telecom, and MOZEN from Hyundai-Kia. More recently, LG Telecom launched its ez-Drive service. In the before-market, Hyundai-Kia Motor Company Group's MOZEN is making a bid for leadership as Daewoo Motor Company has withdrawn from the telematics business; however, a new challenger in the form of Ssangyong Motor Company's Everway service has since emerged following its February 2005 launch. In addition, SI firm POSDATA is committing itself to telematics service development with a view to launching a service in the first half of 2005. Among the service providers, three mobile communication carriers -- SK Telecom, KTF and LG Telecom -- are competing to dominate the telematics service market based on GPS (Geographical Positioning System) technology. They are motivated primarily by the rapid growth of the telematics service business, which with an annual growth rate of 50% holds the promise of being the new 'golden market.' SK Telecom made serious inroads into the telematics market in March 2002 when the company launched its 'Nate Drive' service, which operates through a navigation kit loaded onto a cellular phone. KTF also launched its 'K-Ways' for the after-market in May 2004, which offers route guidance combined with voice navigation and a three-dimensional map. The company is providing Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance's auto insurance subscribers with the 'Anynet' telematics service and launched the 'Everway' service in February 2005 in concert with Ssangyong Motor Company. LG Telecom began its 'ez Drive' telematics service in September 2004 on the basis of its accumulated know-how. In the meantime, KT also made inroads into the telematics service market, adding to the competition between wire and wireless communication business providers. Auto makers are concentrating their energies on developing a cutting-edge "e-car" with a focus on in-vehicle entertainment accompanied by state-of-the-art engines, lighter car bodies and fuel batteries. Through its MOZEN telematics service, Hyundai/Kia Motor Company is seeking to transform the company's image from a manufacturing-oriented hardware company to a customer-oriented company. Ssangyong Motor Company launched its Everway telematics brand after the company developed an independent telematics system with KTF. The service is offered with the high-end Ssangyong marques of the Chairman, Rodius, and Rexton. Renault Samsung Motor, which joined hands with Samsung Electronics, SK Telecom, and TU Media in 2003, offers telematics-capable cars with services that include road guidance, traffic information, a rescue service and information on daily living. In collaboration with DMB business provider, TU Media, the company will offer satellite DMB from this year. The domestic telematics market is estimated at $708 million in 2005, and is expected to grow at an average yearly rate of 74.2% in the anticipation that telematics will become part of a new auto culture, thanks to WiBRO as well as the popularization of DMB and the increase in leisure time.
