Hyundai Mobis, the largest auto parts manufacturer in Korea, is exhibiting a wide variety of module parts and up-to-date electronic control systems. The company has been engaging in A/S parts sales, module parts manufacture and parts export. Recently, Hyundai Mobis has focused resources on auto parts business in order to gain new heights in this sector. In particular, it is concentrating on the development and manufacturing of module parts. The business, started with supplying sash modules to Hyundai Motor for certain passenger car lines in October 1999, has been rapidly expanding.
Currently, Hyundai Mobis develops and produces three kinds of modules, including chassis, front-end, and cockpit modules. The company has a capacity of producing 2.5 million chassis modules, 1.7 million cockpit modules, and 0.6 million of front-end modules. With this capability Hyundai Mobis is supplying cockpit modules to 10 Hyundai and Kia Motors models and chassis modules to 18 models of the two automakers. In particular, Hyundai Motors NF Sonata and Kia Motors are using chassis and cockpit modules produced by Hyundai Mobis. Chassis modules that involve about 100 parts such as axles, suspensions, and sub-frames comprise the backbone of a car. Reflecting the quality of its module products, the firm acquired international quality recognition ISO/TS 16949 for the chassis module system of its Ulsan plant from the International Automotive Task Force in 2003. The institute quality examination criteria and procedures are very complicated and rigorous since they represent the world highest automotive quality system standards. In 2002, the firm also acquired the same international recognitions for its airbag and driver seat module systems. Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis contracted with Daimler Chrysler to supply omplete chassis modules to Daimler Chrysler from 2006 onward. The complete chassis module is a large up-to-date module that combines core parts such as the engine, transmission, and steering wheel on top of chassis frames. t is very significant for us to ship these parts to one of the big three automakers after intense competition with the global auto parts makers, said an official of Hyundai Mobis. The complete chassis module is the same kind that Hyundai Mobis is supplying to Kia Motors for its 4-wheeled drive SUV Sorento. Hyundai Mobis is accelerating its efforts to build technological expertise both through autonomous developmental research and technical tie-ups with foreign companies including Bosch and Textron. Based on these technological resources, Hyundai Mobis is mass-producing ultramodern devices to enhance driver safety and comfort such as smart airbags, ABS, and ESP, thus adding edge to the competitiveness of the domestic automotive industry on the international scene. In particular, it plans to expand investment in R&D to invent new auto parts technologies. The firm has set aside some 438.5 billion won for research and development activities. To that end, the firm will establish unmanned production lines at its plants and focus more on developing lighter parts and environment-friendly products. Hyundai Mobis has invested in developing its auto part exports trade, mindful of its impact on the overall domestic parts industry. While product quality in the domestic parts industry has attained a respectable level, its prices remain within the range of a mere 30% of those in the most advanced nations, thus giving it a substantial competitive edge on the international scene. For this reason, Korea is emerging as the ideal location to outsource auto parts for international automobile manufacturers faced with the pressing need for cost reduction. As for A/S parts sales, due to the specifics of this business, its profit base is in an inter-dependent relation with the number of already operating automobiles. Despite the economic slowdown, currently some 16 million Hyundai/Kia vehicles are operating worldwide. This relative insensitivity of the sector to the overall economic landscape provides a stable basis for profit for Hyundai Mobis.
